UG research initiatives

Dear COEHD Faculty and Staff,
Please post and announce where appropriate.
The Office of Undergraduate Research (O.U.R.) is pleased to announce spring 2014 scholarships for UG researchers. Awards of $1000 will be competitive and there will be 2 awards available for COEHD. Scholarship information and instructions are provided on the attached pdf. Applications are due December 16 by 5pm to Dr. Donovan Fogt at the O.U.R. The online application link can be found at http://research.utsa.edu/UGresearch/
REVISED: Due to the short notice, the "proposal" section will not be required. A faculty mentor is still required to be in place for the application.
Future awards available as well: 2 summer awards available to COEHD announced in early spring for $2000 each. Additional awards for fall 2014 and spring 2015 of $1000 each.

Greetings, Science LISTSERV Members:
The Texas Education Agency is now accepting nominations to the state review panels that will evaluate instructional materials submitted for adoption under Proclamation 2015.
To nominate yourself or someone else to serve on a state review panel, please complete the form posted at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&ItemID=... and submit it to the TEA on or before Friday, January 24, 2014.
Proclamation 2015 calls for instructional materials in the following areas:
* Social Studies, grades K-12
* Social Studies (Spanish), grades K-5
* Mathematics, grades 9-12
* Fine Arts, grades K-12
State review panels are scheduled to convene in Austin for one week during the summer of 2014 to review materials submitted under Proclamation 2015. The TEA will reserve hotel lodging and reimburse panel members for all travel expenses, as allowable by law.
* Panel members should plan to remain on-site for five days to conduct the evaluation.
* Panel members will be asked to complete an initial review of instructional materials prior to the in-person review.
* Panel members will receive orientation and training both prior to the initial review and at the beginning of the in-person review.
* Panel members might be asked to review additional content following the in-person review.
* Because many of the samples will be delivered electronically, panel members should be comfortable reviewing materials on-screen rather than in print.
* Panel members should also have a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
Upon initial contact by a representative of the TEA, state review panel nominees begin a "no-contact" period in which they may not have either direct or indirect contact with any publisher or other person having an interest in the content of instructional materials under evaluation by the panel. The "no contact" period begins with the initial communication from the Texas Education Agency and ends after the State Board of Education (SBOE) adopts the instructional materials. The SBOE is scheduled to adopt Proclamation 2015 materials at its November 2014 meeting.
Nominations are due on or before Friday, January 24, 2014. The nomination form is posted on the TEA website at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&ItemID=....

Please see attached a Special Summer Seed Grant Program that Dr. Agrawal just released to the ADR's. I wanted to put this on your radar, as the turnaround time is short. However, the VPR found funding that has to be expended by August 31, 2014. Please let me know if you have any questions. This RFP mimics the INTRA program, however has different deadlines.

Dear ADRs,
Due to efficiencies we have realized in the VPR office this current fiscal year, we have some onetime resources available that have to be spent in the current FY14 (before Aug. 31, 2014). Thus we are creating a special onetime seed grant program which will provide funding for the summer of 2014 (and only that one summer). The program is very similar to the INTRA grants which will then start providing funds for the subsequent fiscal year - going forward from Sep. 31st, 2014.
Please note that the submission deadline is different for the Summer Seed Grants (Jan. 15th 2014). Our apologies for the short notice but we want to make sure that we spend our resources wisely.
Please go ahead and forward the attached description to your faculty. For additional questions, please contact Dr. Bernard Arulanandam.
