We are proud of the accomplishments of COEHD faculty, students, and staff, but unfortunately we cannot write a full-feature article on every award or achievement that takes place. We would still like for everyone to know about these accomplishments so we have added a section to the weekly COEHDnews for Awards, Announcements and Recognition. If you know of someone in the college that deserves recognition please forward:

Organization that gave the award

The Mexico Center is pleased to announce the 2014-2015 competition for the UTSA Mexico Center Educational Research Fellowship.
This fellowship provides financial assistance for student/faculty research projects on Mexico-related topics that need time in Mexico to do field work or consultation at a university or research center. The student grants, funded by the Carlos and Malú Alvarez International Study Fund, are worth $3,000. They pay for student travel to Mexico, food, lodging, local travel, and supplies/materials needed to complete the project (i.e. data sets for quantitative analysis, transcribers/recorders for fieldwork, etc.) To encourage teams of faculty and student researchers, the Mexico Center will supplement the student grant with up to $1,000 for faculty members working with students on the projects (one faculty member per project). The funds from the Mexico Center for the faculty member supervising the project will pay for faculty travel to Mexico, food, lodging, and supplies/materials needed to complete the project. The grant cannot support faculty research alone. Funding is contingent upon travel approval by the UTSA International Oversight Committee (IOC) (Travel to borders states in Mexico is highly restricted).
Eligibility:
* Current UTSA faculty members and currently enrolled students in any department or discipline.
* Graduate and undergraduate students.
* Previous recipients of the Mexico Center fellowship are eligible to apply.
The UTSA Mexico Center requests copies of the finished work by the spring semester of 2016, a financial report of expenses, and a presentation of the research project at a UTSA Mexico Center Brown Bag lecture.
Proposals are due byMonday, December 1, 2014. Please send the completed application form (in word or pdf format) as an attachment (via-email) to: Olivia.Lopez(a)utsa.edu<mailto:Olivia.Lopez@utsa.edu>. An e-mail confirmation will be returned upon receipt of the proposal. Proposals will be reviewed by the UTSA Mexico Center Advisory Board.
Awards will be announced in January 2015.

Greetings,
I send this message to invite you (and your graduate students) to present at the Critical Questions in Education conference-a national, peer-reviewed education conference taking place in San Diego, California. The 10th annual CQIE conference will be held on February 16 - 18, 2015 at the beautiful U.S. Grant Hotel. The official deadline for proposals is November 15, 2014.
Every year the Critical Questions in Education conference focuses on one or two "critical questions" facing pre-K-12 (or pre-K-16) education. Our theme questions for the February conference are:
1. Why have civil rights era educational legislation and policy in the United States failed our most vulnerable students? How should we address the needs of these students in and out of schools?
2. How is schooling conducted in other countries? What can we learn from the policies, purposes, and practices of education systems-or individual schools-from around the world? And what can systems and schools from around the world learn from American education?
We also welcome proposals on one of our past theme questions. Please see the Call for Proposals, attached, for a full list of topics.
Gary Orfield, Professor of Education at UCLA and co-Director of the Civil Rights Project, will offer an Academy Talk at the conference on the first question; Francisco Ramirez, Professor of Comparative Education at Stanford University, will offer an Academy Talk on the second question. In addition, we are inviting everyone to get a "Seat at the Table" on the third day when we will be planning essays and books on the theme questions.
We hope you will submit a proposal and come join us in San Diego. If you have any questions about the conference or the Academy for Educational Studies, please feel free to contact me.

Attached you will find information regarding the Fall 2014 Commencement. The Memo from the Provost, the Regalia Rental information and Faculty Response Card are also attached for your review and response to the Dean's Office by Monday, November 10, 2014. The Fall 2014 Commencement will be held in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
Commencement will be divided into three ceremonies. The faculty will be expected to attend only the ceremony for our college, Ceremony #2.
Ceremony #1 on Friday, December 19, at 4:00 p.m., College of Liberal and Fine Arts, College of Engineering, University College
Ceremony #2 on Saturday, December 20 at 10:00 a.m., College of Education and Human Development, College of Sciences

Shuttle service is being provided for all faculty participants. Details regarding the shuttle service will be sent out by the Special Events Center.
We have a limited number of Regalia sets in the Dean's Office that can be borrowed by the junior faculty. Please let me know by Friday, December 5, if you would like to borrow regalia. If we still have regalia after this date, the senior faculty can then borrow.
