Hannah Douglas, a graduate of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Education and Human Development (COEHD), was one of three applicants from across the nation accepted into the Doctorate in Child Development program at the Erikson Institute in Chicago. Douglas also received a three-year, full fellowship from the institute.

The Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching in the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) was awarded a Northside Independent School District (NISD) Partner-of-the-Year award for their work with Leon Springs Elementary School. The department will receive the award at the annual NISD Partner-of-the-Year Reception on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the Paul Taylor Field House.

Northside Independent School District (NISD) recently named Lorena Herrera as the 2013-2014 First Year Educator of the Year during their annual district-wide awards ceremony in March. Herrera, a graduate of the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), was one of three teachers district-wide selected to receive an award in the First Year Teacher category.

We're pleased to invite you to an upcoming webinar that USAID is hosting next week, targeted to all higher education institutions and their partners.
Date/Time: This webinar will take place on Wednesday, May 28, from 10:00 am-11:30 am and is hosted jointly by USAID's Global Development Lab and Bureau for Economic Growth, Education and Environment (E3). This will mark a series of biannual webinars to the higher education community, and we plan to hold the next in October.
Purpose: We would like to provide timely updates to the higher education community on USAID programs, strategies, and policies, and to highlight the work of higher education partners - those funded by USAID, and those not - who are transforming and globalizing their campuses. We will also share upcoming or recently closed partnership opportunities and events. The format will allow three USAID presenters and three partners or collaborators to present.

Dear Colleagues,
I realize colleges are focused on closing out a school year right now, and want to be sure that, in the midst of getting in grades and coordinating graduations, no one overlooks this announcement of an important grant opportunity from DOE. THECB hopes many institutions will submit compelling applications for this competition.
Time is short (a 45-day turn-around, applications due June 30), and THECB will be pleased to support your efforts in any way that we can. Only institutions of higher education are eligible to apply, but the agency can partner with you if you believe we can be helpful in your efforts (in data analysis, technical assistance, or some other function).
The total amount allocated for this competition is $75 million, with up to $20 million set aside for Minority Serving Institutions.
The DOE is hosting a stakeholder conference call about this opportunity with Secretary Arne Duncan on May 21 at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern time). To register, RSVP to Belen.Verdugo(a)ed.gov<mailto:Belen.Verdugo@ed.gov> with "RSVP for FITW" in the subject line, before COB Tuesday, May 19 (first-come, first-serve registration). All five Absolute Priorities focus on serving underrepresented, underprepared, or low income students:
I. Increasing Access and Completion for Underrepresented, Underprepared, or Low-Income Students
II. Increasing Community College Transfer Rates to Four-year Colleges for Underrepresented Underprepared, or Low-Income Students
III. Increasing Enrollment and Completion of Underrepresented Underprepared, or Low-Income Students in STEM Degree and Certificate Programs
IV. Reducing Time to Completion, Especially for Underrepresented Underprepared, or Low-Income Students
V. Improving College Affordability, Especially for Underrepresented Underprepared, or Low-Income Students
A Competitive Preference Priority adds 2 points for using Evidence of Promise as the application evidence standard.
Successful FITW projects will include the following characteristics:
1) a project design supported by Strong Theory (as defined in this notice);
2) a data collection plan;
3) a design and implementation plan for evaluation that will demonstrate whether the strategies implemented are showing Moderate Evidence of Effectiveness (as defined in this notice);
4) replicable and scalable reform strategies;
5) a strong focus on improved postsecondary access, affordability, and completion, with an emphasis on low-income students; and
6) a strategy for improvement of postsecondary productivity and effectiveness that holds steady or decreases costs for students.

Northside Independent School District (NISD) recently named Lorena Herrera as the 2013-2014 First Year Educator of the Year during their annual district-wide awards ceremony in March. Herrera, a graduate of the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), was one of three teachers district-wide selected to receive an award in the First Year Teacher category.

Dr. María Arreguín-Anderson, assistant professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, was named the President-Elect for the Texas Association of Bilingual Education (TABE). Arreguín-Anderson will be officially installed as President-Elect this June and will assume presidency in June of 2015.

Suggestions for Faculty Center Event

COEHD Faculty - If you know of a really engaging keynote type of speaker who can speak to a broad audience, please send me their name. The Faculty Center is looking at the possibility of bringing a keynote speaker for a signature event. This speaker must be able to talk to issues across disciplines, so please do not suggest anyone who is specific to your field. They must be attractive to across disciplines and they must be engaging like some of the best TEDx speakers. If you know of anyone, please send them directly to me and do not reply to this message.

Sad news

I am greatly saddened to announce that our colleague George Bergquist passed away Friday morning at his home in Boerne after his courageous fight with metastatic colon cancer.
We were very fortunate to have George in our team for the past 8 years. He genuinely cared for his students and co-workers and was our 'motivator and cheerleader' during challenging times. He initiated our caroling visits to various offices across campus and wrote the lyrics to 'COEHD Advising is here, to bring you some cheer......" George brought peace and harmony to all who had the pleasure of meeting and knowing him.
A graveside service for family and friends will be 11:00 AM at Mission Park South, Wednesday, May 14, 2014. A memorial service will follow that afternoon at 4:00 PM at St. John Lutheran Church in Boerne. To leave condolences for the family, please visit www.ebensberger-fisher.com<http://www.ebensberger-fisher.com> and select the Obituaries tab.
Our Center will be closed Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 to attend the memorial service.
