I'm writing to let you know that Dr. Sarah Nelson, Professor of Educational Leadership and Doctoral Program Coordinator at Texas State University, is a finalist for the position of Chair of the ELPS department, and will be on campus Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for her campus interview. The UTSA Student Volunteer of the Year Award was created to honor an outstanding student for their time, effort and personal commitment to volunteerism and enhancing civic life in their community. Applicants should also embody the true spirit of civic engagement and volunteerism. Please nominate or encourage your students to apply.
Applicants must be currently enrolled at the University of Texas at San Antonio and be in good standing (financial, discipline, academic, etc) with the university and have at least a 2.75 overall cumulative GPA. Nominations and self-nominations are both accepted. The winner will be announced at the University Life Awards on Thursday, April 2, 2015 in the HEB University Center Ballrooms. Finalists will be called prior to the event and are strongly encouraged to attend.
Applicants will also have the option to submit their application for consideration for the Sandra Cisneros "Service to Community" Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship can range from $450-$500. To qualify:
* Student must be in good standing (as described above)
* Must be enrolled at UTSA for the Fall 2015 semester
* Must have a FAFSA on file to show eligibility to receive the scholarship

Latino Education is the economic imperative of our time, and the civil rights issue of our generation. Latino students disproportionately bear the crux of the educational crisis, and this is where the greatest improvements and most fundamental changes must be fared. Please join us for a one-day global summit as we bring much needed attention and discussion to critical issues in Latino education worldwide. Global LEAD will focus on engaging dialogue in order to help create bridges between Latino Education in Latin American and the U.S.
The summit will include four panels and a morning and an afternoon plenaries, which will be organized into research areas: STEM, biliteracy/ESL/TESOL, teaching/pedagogy, arts & education, immigration/migration, community development, and publication and dissemination. Representatives from different countries will form part of each panel ensuring that different sectors of the world will be able to discuss some of the initiatives.
