Dr. Catherine O'Brien of Gallaudet University will be on campus next week to present on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 6 pm in Main 0.104. A deaf scholar/researcher, Dr. Gallaudet is interested in services to the deaf community in the region, particularly Latino and language diverse communities. We invite you to join her for that presentation sponsored by the Consortium for Social Transformation. Attached is a flyer advertising the talk. She will be joined at her presentation by Dr. Steven Weiner, former Provost of Gallaudet University.

Judges Needed for the Texas Science and Engineering Fair, March 28, in San Antonio
The best STEM students from across the state will be at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in downtown San Antonio from March 26 through 29 to present the results of their research in one of 17 science categories at the Texas Science and Engineering Fair (TSEF). These aspiring scientists, mathematicians and engineers have qualified to participate in the TSEF by winning 1st through 3rd place in their science category in one of 15 regional science fairs in the state. Eight projects from the senior division (high school students) will be selected to represent Texas at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) this coming May.
Because judging is competitive, we need subject matter experts to evaluate the projects.
Please consider assisting us in promoting STEM education by volunteering to judge on Saturday, March 28. Judging will begin with breakfast and an orientation at 8:30 am and finish at approximately 3:00 p.m.; we will offer a catered lunch break and free parking.. Mobile apps have proved to be valuable educational tools, but laboratory instructors thus far have been limited to using mobile devices only for virtual laboratories with simulated experiments. Now, researchers have developed a series of mobile applications that allow students to remotely interact with real data and equipment in real laboratories. Students reported deeper engagement levels using mobile apps and the virtual lab.

Teachers on Spring Break are using their week of vacation to detail a legislative agenda at the State Capitol. Hundreds of members of the two largest teachers’ unions in the state met one on one with lawmakers, and rallied at the Capitol on a number of issues they said would improve education and the lives of educators.
