texas Gov. Abbott: Common Core fans have 'buyer's remorse'

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says that states adopting Common Core educational standards continue to suffer from "buyer's remorse" under a wave of conservative criticism.
Abbott argued against the standards in a televised appearance.
The Texas Legislature two years ago banned the State Board of Education from adopting Common Core standards statewide.
A longtime critic of Common Core, Abbott said Sunday that the Obama administration pushing states to adopt the standards explains why "suddenly we've seen so many parents, so many states, so many school districts reject it so harshly."
More than 40 states initially supported Common Core, but governors and lawmakers of several states have since reversed their position.

Call for Proposals-Education conferences in Baltimore and San Antonio
Greetings:
We send you this Call for Proposals to invite your participation at one, or both, of the Critical Questions in Education Conferences. Participants can present on one of our past theme questions at this national, blind peer-reviewed conference. (See the Call for Proposals, attached, for a full list of topics.) But we especially invite proposals on our 2015/16 theme questions:
1. Teaching the disciplines: How are we doing?
* What is it we want students to know and understand from, or about, the disciplines we teach, at both the K-12 and university levels?
* What are the truths the different disciplines aspire to reveal-the big questions they ask and try to answer, the perfection they seek to attain?
* How well do K-12 and university teachers convey these truths or give students access to them?
2. Why don't we read serious books anymore?
* Should we care that so many students, and so many teachers, can't or don't want to read books-not just at the K-12 level, but in colleges and universities, too?
* Should we seek to preserve the idea of an education centered on the serious reading of serious books?
* Are the "Great Books" dead to us? Can we offer students a "liberal education" without having them read serious books?
We invite proposals from people actively teaching in different disciplines, or preparing teacher education candidates to teach in the different disciplines; and we seek proposals from people who love books, work in teacher education, and think about literacy. For suggestions on how these theme questions might be approached, please see the Call for Proposals. Here is more information about the conferences:

November 2-4, 2015 in Baltimore, Maryland at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Inner Harbor Hotel
March 7-9, 2016 , in San Antonio, Texas at the historic Menger Hotel, next to the Alamo and the Riverwalk
About the conference:
The conference-in its 11th year-is designed so participants can share challenging conversations about educational ideas important at both the K-12 and university levels. Paper sessions, panel discussions, book discussions, keynote speakers, social gatherings-all happen at CQIE. It is not, by design, a huge conference. People actually talk and learn from one another. The conference attracts university professors from many different disciplines, especially teacher education (and especially in educational foundations). Graduate students, K-12 teachers and administrators, and anyone interested in the theme question are also welcome at the conference.

AUSTIN — Officials say they won’t include math scores on state-mandated standardized tests for students in third through eighth grade when calculating this year’s state accountability ratings.
