Kinesiology, Health, and Nutrition
Dr. Donovan Fogt is in need of hundreds of male and female students healthy enough to walk between the ages of 18 and 65 years old. He, and his research team, are conducting a study about how the body responds to conditions such as exercise, and what factors may contribute to heart disease. They are creating a large data repository to answer questions related to cardiovascular diseases. They will: collect information about your physical activity, health, depression and mood; collect samples of urine, saliva, and blood for testing hydration status and biomarkers associated with cardiovascular disease; measure your body's heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing in response to exercise, standing, and during a special breathing test; measure your level of physical capacity, strength and balance. The entire procedure will take approximately 4 hours of your time. You will a body composition (body fat %), waist-to-hip ration, and body mass index report for your participation. There is no monetary compensation. All procedures will take place at the UTSA Main Campus in the Integrative Cardiopulmonary and Autonomic Performance Laboratories (ICAPL) located in the Physical Education and Multidisciplinary Studies Buildings. Dr. Kristen Lindahl, assistant professor in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, was named the Teacher Education Blogger for the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) International Association. TESOL has 44,000 members and the blog received nearly 20,000 site visits per month. During Summer Session II, Bilingual Author, Illustrator, and Middle School Teacher, Xavier Garza, spoke to future teachers and students in Dr. Rosalind Horowitz’s RDG 3803, Writing Development and Processes course about his writing career and empathy for and literacy education of adolescent writers. His works have been published by Arte Publico Press and supported by grants from City of Houston through The Cultural Arts Council of Houston. This presentation emanated from Dr. Horowitz’s research on Border Life and its impact on translingual, transcultural, and transformative discourses.

Very sad news. Dr. Martinello was the visionary for our IDS degree. Her passion for teacher education was evident in her efforts to increase students' knowledge regarding inquiry which led to the Martinello Award which given to IDS students who excel in their inquiry projects.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.
She will be missed.

After her retirement in 2000 she returned to serve as our Acting Associate Dean for Research in 2009/10. Her professionalism, kindness, and enthusiastic spirit will be greatly missed.

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I am called upon to inform you that we received a message this morning from Dr. Gillian Cook (retired faculty member) that Dr. Marian Martinello passed away this morning.
As some of you know Dr. Martinello was a faculty member with the College of Education and Human Development since 1975. After her retirement in 2000 she returned to serve as our Acting Associate Dean for Research in 2009/10. Her professionalism, kindness, and enthusiastic spirit will be greatly missed.

If there’s one thing that Thandiwe Dlodlo is passionate about, it’s education. The 13-year teaching veteran and current Director of the Foundational Phase in the Limpopo Province traveled 9,207 miles from her home in South Africa to the UTSA College of Education and Human Development to learn how to become a better writer, teacher, and teacher educator.

Dr. Donovan Fogt is in need of hundreds of male and female students healthy enough to walk between the ages of 18 and 65 years old. He, and his research team, are conducting a study about how the body responds to conditions such as exercise, and what factors may contribute to heart disease. They are creating a large data repository to answer questions related to cardiovascular diseases. They will: collect information about your physical activity, health, depression and mood; collect samples of urine, saliva, and blood for testing hydration status and biomarkers associated with cardiovascular disease; measure your body's heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing in response to exercise, standing, and during a special breathing test; measure your level of physical capacity, strength and balance. The entire procedure will take approximately 4 hours of your time. You will a body composition (body fat %), waist-to-hip ration, and body mass index report for your participation. There is no monetary compensation. All procedures will take place at the UTSA Main Campus in the Integrative Cardiopulmonary and Autonomic Performance Laboratories (ICAPL) located in the Physical Education and Multidisciplinary Studies Buildings. During Summer Session II, Bilingual Author, Illustrator, and Middle School Teacher, Xavier Garza, spoke to future teachers and students in Dr. Rosalind Horowitz’s RDG 3803, Writing Development and Processes course about his writing career and empathy for and literacy education of adolescent writers. His works have been published by Arte Publico Press and supported by grants from City of Houston through The Cultural Arts Council of Houston. This presentation emanated from Dr. Horowitz’s research on Border Life and its impact on translingual, transcultural, and transformative discourses.

One of my most memorable experiences in medical school was caring for an infant who suffered life-threatening seizures progressing to coma. The cause was brain swelling due to water intoxication from “formula stretching.” Her family had been running out of infant formula before the next month’s supply, so resorted to watering down what little formula they had remaining.

In Texas, like much of the United States, if a school district has 20 or more English Language Learners, or ELLs, in a single grade, it’s required to offer bilingual education with a certified bilingual teacher. But for more than two decade many school districts in Texas haven’t been able to make that happen. Last year, more than half the school districts in Texas couldn’t find enough bilingual teachers to teach all the students learning English — as required. They have to ask the state education commissioner to waive that requirement for the year.
