For years, Texas prosecuted more kids for missing school than all other states combined. In 2013, prosecutors charged more than 115,000 kids with truancy in adult criminal courts, where the minors were denied access to lawyers, fined thousands of dollars, and saddled with criminal records, despite evidence that such punitive measures didn't incentivize kids to come to school.

The Sioux Falls School District's Spanish Immersion program started seven years ago with just one kindergarten class. When the school year kicks off next week, the district's program will have nearly 500 kids in grades kindergarten through fifth, and 57 in either sixth or seventh grade.

Childhood obesity affects millions of children around the world. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 18 percent of American children between the ages of six and 11 were considered obese in 2012. In Mexico, 28 percent of boys and 29 percent of girls between the ages of five and 17 were either obese or overweight that same year, based on statistics by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development.

Thousands of San Antonio area kids will be going back to school Monday morning. It won't be Pedro Martinez' first day though, when kids return from summer vacation.
