Over the past decade, approximately 28% of grants have been related to education, 28% to social services, 22% to hospitals and healthcare, 17% to civic and cultural with the remaining percentage spread out in the above categories.
Award Information:
There is no limit; however, on average, grants range from $5,000 to $25,000. The Foundation only accepts requests for one year of funding.

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) Grants Program is accepting applications to attend the Institute on Statistical Analysis for Education Policy: Using Large-Scale Data to Study Mathematics Education and Outcomes<http://www.aera.net/ProfessionalOpportunitiesFunding/AERAFundingOpportuni...> to be held in Washington, DC, May 10-13, 2016. The goal of the Institute is to build the capacity of the U.S. education research community to use large-scale national and international data sets such as those from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), National Science Foundation (NSF), and other federal agencies for basic, policy, and applied research. Publicly available national data sets such as, but not limited to, ECLS-K<http://nces.ed.gov/ecls/kindergarten.asp>, ELS:2002<http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/els2002/>, and HSLS:09<http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/hsls09/>, can be used to examine issues in mathematics education and outcomes. Participants bring their choice of a relevant federal data set to the training. AERA Grants Governing Board members, agency staff, and outside experts jointly provide hands-on training in the application of large-scale data sets to examine mathematics education and related issues.
Advanced doctoral students and recent doctorates are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants should be familiar with commonly used statistical methods (e.g., regression) and either SPSS or Stata. Reminder: COEHD Tenure and Promotion Forum this Thursday

The COEHD Tenure and Promotion forum is coming up this Thursday from 2-4 pm at the Downtown Campus. It will be held from 2-4 pm in the Buena Vista Building Community Room, BV 1.322. Attached is a flyer that you can post or share with interested colleagues; it contains details about participating administrators and faculty.
If you are an Assistant Professor planning to apply at some point for tenure or an Associate Professor considering an application for Full Professor, consider attending the session. Provost Frederick, Dean Merchant, and colleagues from across departments will share information about these processes. There will also be ample opportunity to discuss processes and to ask questions.
Please feel free to let me know if there is something that you want to discuss beforehand. Otherwise, I will see some of you on Thursday!

Summary:
CREST Centers promote faculty engagement in research activities at the highest level. An educational environment based on discovery will be vibrant, with both undergraduate and graduate students engaged in the process of discovery and innovation through modern and relevant curricula, courses, and research experiences. Students will have opportunities to become significant participants in the broader community of scholarship in their respective fields. Minority-serving institutions offer an opportunity to engage student and faculty populations from underrepresented groups in numbers that can have a significant impact, consistent with the NSF goal to broaden participation and with the NSF mission: to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense and to ensure that research is fully integrated with education so that today's revolutionary work will also be training tomorrow's top scientists and engineers. In addition to bolstering the research infrastructure and research competitiveness of MSIs of higher education, the CREST program seeks to increase the workforce presence of individuals from groups underrepresented in STEM fields. Attentiveness to career development of the women and men working with senior faculty researchers in all CREST Centers can play an important role in diversifying the national STEM workforce.

Eligibility Criteria:
Undergraduate student in good standing with the university,
Full-time academic status for fall and spring semester awards with no full-time status required for summer awards
UTSA or overall GPA ≥ 3.0.
Students must have a faculty mentor in place
Must have a project planned or underway with that mentor at the time of application submission
Funding for first-time student researchers will be prioritized but this status is not considered an eligibility criteria. Students receiving funding/support from other research programs will not be considered. Students can only receive one OUR Undergraduate Research Scholarship while at UTSA.
Complete applications sent from OUR to respective Associate Dean for Research of student applicant's college (i.e., College of Liberal and Fine Arts if applicant is studying History). Associate Deans for Research (ADR) or Associate Deans of Undergraduate Programs from applicant's home college will evaluate proposals and forward a ranked list to the OUR. The OUR director will make the final decisions based on ADR recommendation and the student status with Financial Aid Office.
At least 2 awards will be made available for students from each degree conferring college depending on OUR funding.
Award Process
The OUR will have the UTSA Financial Aid and Enrollment Services/Scholarship Office (FAESO) run a federal financial aid report on all potential awardees as determined by the ADR for the respective colleges. Because all forms of financial aid affect the total federal aid a student may receive, it is important to identify and avoid any conflicts in expected federal award amounts. Should there be a potential conflict, the OUR, in conjunction with FAESO, will discuss the conflict with the potential awardee. In rare cases the scholarship award may be passed to the next eligible student on the ADR list due to such conflicts.
The award ($1000 per student awarded during either fall or spring long semesters or $2000 per student awardee over the course of the summer months) will be held by FAESO until the end of the respective program period. Students will disseminate their work at the end of the program in a written report to satisfy the program requirements and be eligible to receive their $1000 or $2000 (summer) award as disbursed through FAESO. Students cannot exceed their FAFSA-determined financial need and may have to negotiate with UTSA FAESO to remain eligible to receive the scholarship should they be chosen.
***Note: Awardees of this scholarship will be required to submit a final report demonstrating COMPLETION of their proposed project or NEAR COMPLETION WITH JUSTIFICATION at the end of the program period (date to be announced) in order to receive their monetary award.***
The OUR director will evaluate the research reports and clear the student payment disbursement with FAESO. At that time, the student will receive their award in full and their participation in the program is complete.
This scholarship is considered as "competitive" in that it is open to out-of-state and international students. Non-Texas residents and international students awardees will benefit from paying the Texas in-state tuition rate during the semester of the award.
Students may only be awarded one OUR Undergraduate Research Scholarship during their time at UTSA. However, other research scholarships and other funding opportunities are available for continued UG research.

We are seeking chapter ideas/proposals that fit our theme. Contributors are welcome to submit chapters on the following topics relating to empowerment through mobile technology: social media, open educational resources, LGBTQ issues, disability services, accessibility, universal design for learning, social justice, social transformation, critical pedagogy, critical literacy, evolving technologies geared toward empowerment and engagement, infrastructural and logistical issues regarding mobile technology, and other topics related to opening access to all learners.

The steps adjacent to the Humanities and Social Sciences Building were virtually empty this week after the Christmas and New Year's holidays. But that is soon to change as students, faculty and staff return after the holidays. The scene soon will look very different. and more like the picture at left on January 11. Some students are on campus this week to enroll for the spring semester, but all will return will return to normal with the start of classes.

It’s estimated that only about eight percent of the millions of Americans setting New Year’s resolutions this year will actually accomplish them. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t things people can do to improve their chances of success. Heather Trepal, associate professor in the UTSA Department of Counseling, is a licensed professional counselor and an expert in goal setting. She says that the biggest hurdle that people face when setting new personal goals – New Year’s resolutions, in particular – is not being specific enough in how they plan to accomplish them.

Student opportunity with ATE for free iPad!

Faculty, staff, and organization leaders - The Academy for Teacher Excellence (ATE) staff has a short, 10-minute, prepared presentation with handouts and we would like to come visit your class, group, or club sometime between January 11 and January 25 and present this opportunity to your students.
ATE is currently seeking students to volunteer in our after-school Informal Learning Clubs beginning Spring 2016. Students are loaned an iPad at the beginning of the program, and if they fulfill all the requirements they get to keep the iPad!

The Harold T. and H. Joyce Cook Scholarship - Undergraduate students pursuing an IDS degree seeking teacher certification at the elementary (EC-6th or 4-8) level. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and Financial Need.
The COEHD Presidential Scholarship - Incoming Freshmen and undergraduate students - Full-time and COEHD majors only. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
