Elizabeth Cook, doctoral candidate in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and the 2016 - 2017 Gaye Theresa Johnson African American Studies Doctoral Fellow, was selected to receive the 2016 American Educational Studies Association (AESA) – Taylor & Francis Past President’s Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Dissertation Research. Nominated by Dr. Theodorea Berry, Cook's application was chosen from a national applicant pool and her writing has demonstrated exceptional potential in the area of educational studies. Additionally, her research paper was also selected and highlighted as the 'Reviewer's Choice' Critical Race Studies and Women in Education presentation this year and is based on her dissertation titled, "Black Faces in Brown Spaces: Black Women Graduate Students in Hispanic Serving Institutions in the South." Immigrant groups that landed in Texas in the 19th century had neither the money nor materials to replicate the ornate churches of Europe they knew and loved. But what they had was paint, and they used it expertly to trick the eye, creating a grandeur that reminded them of the sacred spaces in their memories. “The Painted Churches of Texas,” a photo exhibit that pays tribute to them, opens at the Institute of Texan Cultures on Nov. 19 and will be open through March 5. It showcases what curator Sarah Gould calls the ingenious work of immigrants: Czech, German, Polish, Spanish and Mexican, among others.

Call for Chapter Proposals – (Under)Represented Latin@s in STEM

Dear colleagues,
We are seeking chapter proposals for the book (Under)Represented Latin@s in STEM: Increasing Participation Throughout Education and the Workplace edited by Timothy Yuen, Emily Bonner, and María Guadalupe Arreguín-Anderson from the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching at UTSA. This edited book has been contracted with Peter Lang Publishing with an expected publication date in early 2018.
This edited book examines critical issues surrounding the underrepresentation of Latin@s in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the United States. This collection of scholarly chapters will explore a broad range of historical and contemporary issues surrounding Latin@ underrepresentation in STEM, spanning multiple contexts, grade levels, learning environments, learner ability, and STEM disciplines. The book will present research on evidence-based programs aimed at increasing Latin@ participation in STEM throughout the educational pipeline from the perspectives of teacher preparation, family and community involvement, and student engagement.

UTeachSA Conversations: 2nd meeting

As announced in a prior email, our new UTeachSA program proudly serves the first cohort of 14 students who are interested in becoming STEM teachers in secondary schools. We are in the process of adapting the sequence of course work to meet the needs of our local community. Our first COEHD “UTeachSA Conversations” took place on Oct 25 at the 1604 campus, and our second meeting will take place next week.
You are invited to join us in developing the program into an exemplary model integrating technology, pedagogy, and content into a culturally grounded holistic experience for our students. The first meeting at the Downtown Campus, open to all of COEHD, will take place in BV 4.301B (Buena Vista building, 4th floor) on Monday, November 14, 2016, from 1-2 pm.

Dr. Rosalind Horowitz, a professor in the Departments of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching and Educational Psychology, was invited to speak at the World Congress of Comparative Education Societies on “Characterizing Adolescents, Youth Oral Cultures, and Literacies: A Global Perspective” on August 23, 2016 in Beijing, China. She, along with Mingxia Zhi, a doctoral student in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, presented “Reconceptualizing Academic L2 Writing: Cultural Conversational Contributions within Written Language in International Assessments” during the conference. Horowitz was welcomed to China, by Dr. Yingjie Wang, President of the XVI World Congress of Comparative Education Societies and Senior Professor of Beijing Normal University; and Dr. Qi Dong, President of Beijing Normal University.
