Native American students make up only 1.1 percent of the nation's high school population. And in college, the number is even smaller. More than any other ethnic or racial group, they're the least likely to have access to college prep or advanced placement courses. Many get little or no college counseling at all. In 1998, College Horizons, a small nonprofit based in New Mexico, set out to change that through five-day summer workshops on admissions, financial aid and the unique challenges they'll face on campus.

It may look like Gael Gonzalez, 6, is simply having fun, crouched on the floor and playing with a miniature train set. But what’s happening for him at a new autism clinic at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is of utmost importance. “Model everything he says and does,” Rachel Pantermuehl of the Autism Treatment Center told mother Marcela Gonzalez, who sat next to her son on the floor. Gael, as well as Gonzalez’s other son, Santiago, 5, who also has autism, are among the first patients of the San Antonio Applied Behavior Analysis (SAABA) Project, a collaboration between the University of Texas at San Antonio, the Children’s Hospital and the Autism Treatment Center.
