Good afternoon
As many of you are aware the American Educational Research Association (AERA) will meet for their annual meeting in San Antonio starting Thursday, April 27 until Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Convention Center. For those of you who are not familiar with AERA, the annual meeting with bring around 15,000 educational researchers from all over the world to the city.
To date, I have already received several emails from my colleagues around the world asking about restaurants and things to do. So I thought I would crowd source the members of COEHD to develop a list of restaurants we could have ready to share with our colleagues.
Please send me the names and addresses of a couple of your favorite restaurants in the downtown area (as well indication of cost and type of food or best items if any) and I will collate the list. Once I am done, I will send the list back around.
Please give me the name and address of the restaurants by 1 September 2016 so I can put the list together.

August is back to school for children everywhere, but what will the 2016 school year hold for trans children and their parents in San Antonio in light of recent transphobic rhetoric? The trans bathroom debates are just the tip of the transphobia that children across the nation have to face in school.
The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center is hosting a plática and workshop called “Son Tus Niños Tambien: Trans Kids Back To School” that will facilitate a conversation between teachers, parents and their children on how best to validate/respect/protect trans children in schools.

The speakers for the workshop will include school administrators, counselors and legal experts. These speakers will address the legal rights of
trans children and their parents, best practices for school teachers/administrators when interacting with trans students in preparation for the
2016-2017 school year.
We will also have a parent panel that will discuss their various experiences of navigating the school system while having a transgender child, as well as their concerns and visions for the future.
While this event will center around trans children, parents, educators but all allies are welcome.

Dear Colleagues,
Please join me in thanking and congratulating Dr. Page Smith for his work as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies. Dr. Smith has worked to ensure that the graduate programs within the COEHD are strong and effective. Dr. Smith has let me know that he will be stepping down from this position as of September 1, 2016 and returning to his faculty position. His commitment and dedication to the College, UTSA, and our students has been evident in all of his work. I wish him the best as he returns to his faculty activities.
As this point, I am requesting applications from interested parties. If you are interested in serving the COEHD in this capacity, please send me your CV and a cover letter with your (1) relevant experiences, (2) knowledge of and vision for the position, and (3) a brief discussion of the goodness of fit . As September 1 is fast approaching, I ask that interested parties please submit these materials electronically by Monday, August 15 with Karen Hoskins copied. I hope to have a person in place by the last week of August so there is a bit of time to meet with Dr. Smith and the team for a debriefing and status report on issues related to Graduate Studies and ensure a smooth transition.

Greetings

Dear Colleagues,
I would like o take this opportunity to greet you. I have just completed my first week at UTSA and thank all of you whom I have met for the warm welcome. I am settling into both the UTSA and San Antonio community .
My plan is to spend the month of August meeting one on one with Associate Deans,Department Chairs, Center Directors, and Unit heads within the COEHD in order to learn about your individual units and lay the foundation for our work together. We are planning a College wide meeting (invitations to follow soon) for September and this will give us a chance to meet new and returning colleagues and share news.
In the coming weeks I will also be blocking some time each week (a block at the 1604 campus and a block at the Downtown campus) to meet with people. These will be informal meetings that last about 30 minutes and will allow me to get to know you and the work you do in the College, and how the Dean's office can support that work, and give you a chance to get to know me . The announcement for these meetings will come shortly after the semester begins.
I look forward to our work together and to meeting each of you as the semester begins and wish you a restful remainder of the summer break.

Physical Servers for Move to JPL Datacenter Impact

Hello Everyone,
We are in the process of moving all our COEHD server and technology infrastructure to the JPL datacenter. Next Tuesday is determined as the best window for the move so all services including the following will be off line and inaccessible for the majority of that day.
· Open Journal Systems and domains.(EDF, AMAE, BBL), Student Wordpress for KINE.
· App and File Hosting(Printer/Scanning Hosting all Departments, Reading Plaza, Library Software, Lab Data Hosting, Nutribase Server, Titanium Scheduling and Data Hosting for Sarabia FLC...)
· Image Hosting for Lab and Fac/Staff Technicians and Resources.
· KeyServer(Licensing)
Everything will be offline beginning at 7AM that morning, please let me know if anyone has questions or concerns.
