San Antonio (October 31, 2017) - The Pew Research Center reported earlier this month that the high school dropout rate among Hispanic students has shrunk to a new low, continuing a downward trend over the last two decades. Similarly, IDRA's analyses found that the Texas attrition rate of 29 percent for Hispanic students is below 30 percent for the first time in three decades. In 1985-86, when IDRA's attrition studies began, the rate for Hispanic students was 45 percent going as high as 54 percent after that year.
"At 24 percent statewide for all student groups, our high schools are losing one-fourth of their students. It isn't the fact that Texas attrition went down to 24 this year that's important; it's the fact that the number never goes below 24 percent," said Dr. María "Cuca" Robledo Montecel, IDRA president and CEO. "Also, 29 percent is high for any student group, but especially for the largest group in the state - Hispanic students. We need to do more than try harder or tweak. Texas has to be serious about investing and being strategic. Since this problem is systemic, the solutions must be as well.
The Intercultural Development Research Association released detailed findings today<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001NNT_1lfm3luKZ63CGFEOR89loSaaw63TWCmCaqB5Wz...> from its latest study - which examines time series data. Key findings show:
* Texas is failing to graduate one out of every four students - which translates to losing 11 students per hour. The statewide attrition rate is 24 percent (down from 25 percent last year).
* Texas high schools lost 99,960 students in 2016-17.
* At this rate, Texas will not reach universal high school education for another two decades in 2037.
* Black students and Hispanic students are about two times more likely to leave school without graduating with a diploma than White students.
* In the last 32 years, Texas schools have lost a cumulative total of more than 3.7 million students from public high school enrollment prior to graduation.

IDRA released a report, College Bound and Determined<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001NNT_1lfm3luKZ63CGFEOR89loSaaw63TWCmCaqB5Wz...>, in February 2014 showing how one south Texas school district transformed itself from low achievement and low expectations to planning for all students to graduate from high school and college. The result was a school district that doubled its number of high school graduates, cut dropout rates in half and increased college-going rates. Half of the district's students are earning college credit while still in high school.
Each fall, IDRA releases its attrition study. The latest study became available today online<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001NNT_1lfm3luKZ63CGFEOR89loSaaw63TWCmCaqB5Wz...>. Attrition rates are an indicator of a school's holding power, or the ability to keep students enrolled in school and learning until they graduate. IDRA was commissioned to conduct Texas' first-ever comprehensive statewide study of high school dropouts using a high school attrition formula to estimate the number and percent of students who leave school prior to graduation. That study in 1986 was the state's first major effort to assess the school holding power of Texas public schools and resulted in state-level policy reforms for the state education agency to count and report dropout data. IDRA is the only organization that has examined Texas attrition rates consistently, with the same methodology, for 32 years.
The annual attrition studies released by IDRA include county-level data by race and ethnicity. Troops to Teachers (TTT) Program- DoD

The Department of Defense is requesting proposals for participation in the Troops for Teachers (TTT )Program and facilitating the employment of participants (eligible current and former members of the armed forces) as elementary school teachers, secondary school teachers, and career or technical teachers.
They anticipate funding 10 awards, minimum amount to be awarded is $100,000.00 and the maximum award is anticipated at $400,000.00. The closing date for application is January 26, 2018.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP FOR INNOVATIVE EDUCATION (CASTTech)<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/graduate_assistant...>
We are looking for one graduate student for graduate assistantship working on the development and implementation of innovative learning environments in connection with CAST Tech High School. Responsibilities of the assistantship include working with the program coordinator and research faculty assisting in duties as assigned, to include: (a) organizing meetings and time-tables; (b) helping with program administration tasks; (c) helping faculty with research and other academic projects associated with materials development and curriculum design; (d) other responsibilities and duties as assigned. The graduate assistantship will be for 19 hours per week beginning November 2017. Extension of the position to spring 2018 and beyond is possible, contingent on funding. Qualifications
Candidates must be current graduate students in the College of Education and Human Development. Candidates must maintain enrollment in at least six hours of graduate course during the full period of the assistantship. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in graduate work, or if entering the program, a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. Successful experience in working with high school students in a helping relationship is desirable; experience in use of computers is required. Preference will be given to students who plan on graduating in Spring 2018 or later.
Salary
Candidates may be paid approximately $12-14 an hour (depending on qualifications).

We are looking for a graduate student for graduate assistantship working with Dean's office in the College of Education and Human Development. The graduate assistantship will be for 10 - 19 hours per week beginning November 2017. Extension of the position to Spring 2018 is possible, contingent on funding.
Description of Job Duties
Work with team of faculty and administrators to explore program and policy options associated with innovative EC-12 education in Texas. Experience with library searches, finding and reviewing educational policy documents, and writing briefs is preferred. Additional preferred qualifications include good interpersonal and organizational skills; responsible, flexible and able to maintain a professional attitude.

Nominations for Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Awards 2018

Dear COEHD Faculty,
The U. T. System is seeking nominations for the 2018 Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Awards. Per Steve Leslie, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, “The awards will recognize faculty who deliver the highest quality of undergraduate instruction, demonstrate their commitment to teaching, and have a history and promising future of sustained excellence with undergraduate teaching.” Tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track award recipients will receive $25,000 each.
The University of Texas at San Antonio will submit a cadre of tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track/adjunct nominees for consideration of the award. Therefore, each college will submit a maximum of the following numbers of nominees:

* Nominees must have at least three years teaching experience at the university level.
The nomination of strong candidates who may already have received teaching awards or teaching award nominations is encouraged.
Below you will find the COEHD timeline for the submission/review process. As you can see, the timeframe is very tight and the awards are quite large. Therefore, it is important that we adhere to the timeline.
The nomination process will be conducted in two phases:
Phase I:
Nomination packets should be submitted to Laura Earleywine (laura.earleywine(a)utsa.edu) in the COEHD-Office of the Dean no later than 8:00 a.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017.
All nomination packets must contain the following materials for Phase I review:
1. A completed application form (6 pages maximum) (attached)
2. A CV that emphasizes teaching accomplishments (maximum: 15 pages)
3. Written statement delineating their philosophy of teaching (maximum: 3 pages, 12 pt. font).
2 Each college will identify their nominees and email their names to Dr. Maricela Oliva by Friday, November 10,2017. All notified nominees will submit their materials for Phase I review via email to Dr. Maricela Oliva no later than 8:00am on Friday, December 8, 2017
Phase II
In January 2018, UTSA ROTA Selection Committee will determine the university's Phase II cohort of nominees who will develop a full e-portfolio to be submitted in March for consideration at the UT System level.
