Dr. Roxanne Henkin, professor emerita from the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching and director emeritus of the San Antonio Writing Project, was recently named the president of the Whole Language Umbrella, an international literacy organization within the National Council of Teachers of English. John Quarles, associate professor of computer science at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), is taking a new approach to his students’ final projects in his video game development class this semester. He’s partnered with local non-profit Gamerz 4 Vets, which aims to rehabilitate injured veterans through gaming, and asked his students to create a video game specifically tailored to a disabled veteran.

Elisheva Adler was 20 years old, sitting in pajamas in her childhood bedroom in Long Island, the first time she saved someone's life via text message. Adler had just started volunteering as a counselor for Crisis Text Line. The 4-year-old nonprofit provides free crisis intervention through a medium that is increasingly favored by young people: texts. Using the code 741741, counselors have exchanged more than 50 million messages with people who are facing issues from stress at school to self-harm. Out of those exchanges have come thousands of "active rescues" where first responders are called to a scene.

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is kicking off the holiday season with Toys for Tickets. In partnership with the UTSA Student Government Association and the Elf Louise Christmas Project, Campus Services is hosting the donation drive as part of its Citation Donation Days. Now through Friday, Dec. 1, customers can receive 50 percent off one outstanding parking citation with the donation of a children’s toy. Toys must be new, non-violent and a minimum $5 value.
