The UTSA College of Public Policy is hosting an information session on the Archer Graduate Program in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 11, 2018 in the Student Union – SU 2.02.12 from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Two additional sessions will take place at a later date at the Downtown Campus.
The Archer program gives students the opportunity to intern in Washington, D.C. during the summer semester. They learn more about the federal policy-making process and gain valuable skills necessary in many public service professions. Students do not have to be in the College of Public Policy to apply. This education and professional opportunity is for any graduate student at UTSA who may have an interest in politics and an interest in the role of government as it pertains to their educational and career goals.

Peanut butter parking time has returned to UTSA. Today, Campus Services launched its fourth annual Peanut Butter Parking Campaign in collaboration with the Student Government Association (SGA) and the San Antonio Food Bank.
During the campaign, customers have the option to pay eligible parking citations issued between Monday, August 27 and Friday, August 31 with a donation of peanut butter. The Peanut Butter Parking Campaign educates the campus community about parking policies while simultaneously reducing financial burden and benefiting the local community.

Several previous studies called into question the government’s official tally. One analysis by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and other institutions concluded that the number of hurricane-related deaths likely ranged from about 800 to 8,500. A study released earlier this month by researchers at Pennsylvania State University and the University of Texas at San Antonio estimated the number of fatalities was 1,139.

This session will focus on pursuing funding from the Department of
Education as well as on pursuing funding for STEM education research
from NSF. Other funders of education research, including the Spencer
Foundation, will also be discussed. We will talk about types of grants, the
roles of program officers and how to approach them, how proposals are
reviewed, and what reviewers are looking for.

The U.S. District Court in Massachusetts is currently considering a challenge brought against Harvard University's race-conscious admissions policies and practices in a case called SFFA v. Harvard. The lawsuit was filed by Students for Fair Admissions, an organization created by Edward Blum, who recruited Asian American plaintiffs in the case after he lost the last major challenge against affirmative action before the U.S. Supreme Court in Fisher v. University of Texas.
The case will establish an important record as it potentially makes its way to the U.S. Supreme Court and could have important implications for all universities, public and private. As such, we believe it is vitally important that the lower federal court base its decision on the rigorous body of research that supports Harvard's policy. With this important interest in mind, a small group of us from across the country with expertise on issues related to the case, with the assistance of our pro-bono attorney, have drafted an amicus curiae (friend-of-the-court) brief on behalf of social science experts on Asian Americans, race, and/or college access. The plaintiff in the case has asked the court to rule on its behalf before the case goes to trial; the draft brief<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.drop...> supports Harvard's opposition to that request. The brief must be filed by August 30, 2018.
In the case, plaintiff argues that Harvard's limited consideration of race in its admissions process intentionally discriminates against Asian American applicants. In light of tight space limits, we are not able to include all the important issues to address these arguments, but overall, the draft brief<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.drop...> addresses the following major points supported by research: (1) why Asian American applicants, like applicants of all races, benefit from Harvard's whole-person review process; and (2) why Plaintiff's arguments, which promote numerical measures as the only measures of success, are not only flawed, but based on racial myths and stereotypes of Asian Americans.

Dr. Rosalind Horowitz, professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, has been nominated for the prestigious Edward Fry Book Award of the national Literacy Research Association (LRA) for her book, "The Achievement Gap in Reading: Complex causes, persistent issues, possible solutions." The book was coedited with S. Jay Samuels, professor emeritus at The University of Minnesota—Twin Cities. Contributors to the volume devoted 50 to 65 years in scholarly research on equity and opportunity in student achievement. Nominations were made by Routledge/Taylor & Francis Publishers and a faculty member at Penn State University.
