Don’t miss the NIH Research Funding Workshop at the University of Texas at San Antonio! The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is hosting a regional research funding workshop at the University of Texas at San Antonio titled “Enhancing the Participation of Basic Research Investigators and Physician Scientists in the Biomedical Workforce”. This two-day workshop is free and open to physician-scientist, as well as early-stage and mid-career basic research investigators. The workshop will provide research funding information from several Institutes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) including NIAID, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), and National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). Preliminary Action Research with Alamo Colleges

Sent on behalf of Dr. Maricela Oliva ************************************** Colleagues, Last summer, the Alamo Colleges reached out to me as a member of the higher education program and ELPS department regarding possible partnership on action research projects involving their faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Richard Drum and I have met several times with representatives of the Alamo Colleges in an effort to respond to the interest first communicated to us by Palo Alto President Mike Flores who is now Chancellor Flores. Some of the interest they have conveyed is in general areas not necessarily in ELPS or the higher education program, i.e., curriculum development, developmental education, student mobility, economic status, and other areas situated possibly in other COEHD departments. Dr. Drum and I and others are at a stage now where we want to identify individuals in COEHD who might be interested in additional information about this possible collaboration, and/or to be invited to a subsequent action research workshops or meetings at the college. We have developed the attached form and ask you to fill out and return it to me so we know you are tentatively interested. We will compile this information to help us identify areas of possible collaboration and to be ready to "match" prospective partners if there is interest both at UTSA and the Alamo Colleges. Since this is an emerging partnership and discussions are still developing, filling out the attached form helps us know who to keep well informed. Our next preliminary meeting on this requested partnership is later this afternoon, with academic administrators of the individual campuses. Three Internal Research Awards to Consider Applying for this Spring

The Internal Research Awards (INTRA) program is part of The UTSA VPREDKE coordinated efforts to promote research and scholarship of the highest quality. This program offers experience in identifying and submitting applications to potential funding sources, provides preliminary data to support applications for extramural funding, and enhances scholarly and creative activities. The program is awarding approximately 20 grants of $5,000 each to winning applications. Deadline: March 01, 2019 The Grant for Research Advancement and Transformation (GREAT) program will provide seed grants to support new areas of research for faculty at UTSA. The primary goal of these awards will be to assemble preliminary data that can be used to seek extramural funding. It is expected that up to four grants for a maximum of $20,000 each may be awarded. Deadline: March 22, 2019 The Connecting through Research Partnerships (Connect) Program sponsored by the Office of the VPREDKE at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), is a grant opportunity offered to enhance greater scientific collaboration between the two institutions and to increase both UTSA’s and SwRI’s research-funding base with cross-campus collaborative programs. The program encourages interaction between investigators in support of the acquisitions of established extramural, peer-reviewed research funding. This agreement provides unprecedented opportunities for researchers to work together in addressing issues of mutual interest and need. Please Discontinue IRB Submissions as Learning Exercises

Dear Colleagues, Reviewing IRB protocols from students in COEHD has come to occupy a disproportionate amount of IRB staff’s time, relative to other colleges. This affects the speed at which the two IRB staff can review and process IRB proposals from faculty and students in all colleges. To lessen the load we (COEHD) are putting on IRB staff, please do not require, ask, or encourage students to submit IRB protocols in your classes as learning activities. Review of Human Subject protocol by IRB staff should be restricted to activities in which data is collected for the purpose of generating new knowledge, with the intention to communicate, disseminate, and/or publish research findings. There are sections of the IRB Human Subject protocol forms that COEHD students seem to have particular difficulty completing correctly. In January I will work with Dr. Stevenson and the IRB staff to identify those sections and report them back to you so that you can communicate needed information to students in research classes and whose theses and dissertations you supervise to reduce the frequency of these errors in your students’ IRB protocol submissions. I have been asked to think “outside the box” to identify ways that COEHD faculty can prepare students to submit IRB protocols with fewer errors (again, obviously, to reduce the administrative burden in IRB staff). Please share with me your ideas. My first thought is that those faculty who supervise students’ research efforts should be responsible for reviewing students’ protocols before the students submit protocols for review and then after receiving the IRB reviews faculty should assist their students with needed corrections. But I would like some more creative ideas, so please help me problem-solve this issue. Thank you, Michael Michael J. This particular section (as a form to enter info) was in Digital Measures and now it will be part of the Workflow function of Digital Measures, which will work as an integrated system. While I am coordinating the Workflow testing and launch, I wanted to make sure the faculty members can work on the narrative in Word, to be later copied and pasted in Workflow easily after its launch.
