Rivera’s book and film highlight his struggles as a farmworker, but also his triumph of overcoming the barriers he faced in his life; the novel is considered “one of groundbreaking works of emerging Chicana/o literature…”. We are highlighting Tomás Rivera’s work at our Courageous Conversation, today, this Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 5pm; UTSA Downtown Buena Vista Theatre. The question then arises: What does strong, research-based teacher preparation look like? And who’s doing it? National Education Policy Center Fellow Jeannie Oakes<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fclick.i...> and her co-author, Linda Darling-Hammond, explore these questions in a new book entitled Preparing Teachers for Deeper Learning<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fclick.i...>.(For a series of free-to-download briefs based on the book, go here<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fclick.i...>.) The book describes the approaches employed by seven teacher preparation programs that embrace “deeper learning,” a research-based approach that emphasizes five essential elements for teacher education: * Developmentally grounded and personalized * Contextualized * Applied and transferred * Accessed in productive communities of practice * Equitable and oriented to social justice Oakes and Darling-Hammond selected the seven programs based on references from experts in the field, document reviews, prior studies, evaluations, and evidence about practices and outcomes, including extensive surveys of graduates and local hiring managers such as principals. Geographic diversity was also taken into account, as was the desire to highlight programs with different structures ranging from traditional, undergraduate teacher education to a residency program based at a charter school. Common characteristics of the programs include extensive amounts of time spent in schools, diverse student bodies, a focus on project-based learning, and the use of cohort models. Vignettes, based on extensive observations, illustrate the programs’ approaches. For example, one vignette focuses on a Montclair State program called Art Backpacks, a clinical experience opportunity for prospective teachers that connects local artists to students and families at a dual-language elementary school in Newark, NJ. Another portrays an intern teacher at High Tech High, a former ecologist teaching a 12th-grade environmental science class, who worked with his students to re-till the school garden after someone unintentionally killed the fruits and vegetables with a chemical spray: The teaching moment highlighted the effects of chemicals on food sources. Yet another follows a Trinity College teacher candidate as she uses a Socratic Seminar approach to help an AP World History class to better understand the concept of apartheid, connecting it to conditions in the United States and abroad. MAS K-12 Professional Development Workshop

Dear COEHD Colleagues, On behalf of the Mexican American Studies program at UTSA, I'd like to cordially invite you to attend our upcoming MAS K-12 Teacher Professional Development Workshop on Saturday, October 12, 2019, from 9a.m.-1:30 p.m. Our workshop will take place at the UTSA Downtown Campus, Durango Building, La Villita Room (1st floor). We're incredibly excited to grow our community of MAS K-12 educators in San Antonio and the state. Given the growing demand for MAS in our public schools, UTSA's MAS program has partnered with education policy and research organizations like IDRA and K-12 educators from our Somos MAS community. We believe that all students have the right to MAS curricula across grade levels, subject areas, and education programs. As such, we've organized these teacher-led workshops to introduce K-12 teachers and community educators to teaching/learning approaches in the field of MAS and provide them with TEKS aligned lesson plans and resources. We're also offering continuing education credits to all participants and will provide breakfast and lunch, as well. I hope you can attend our workshop. We'd also like to invite pre-service teachers from our college to attend, so if you work with any prospective teachers, please encourage them to attend and share our flyer with your teacher contacts.
