I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Heather Trepal, as the new Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Student Success.
Dr. Trepal has been with UTSA since 2004 and is a full professor in the Counseling Department where she served as GAR for the Counseling Department for 13 years. Dr. Trepal has extensive knowledge and experience working within COEHD and our students and will be a very valuable asset to the college in this role.
A few of her achievements as GAR include working in conjunction with colleagues to create a Bilingual Counseling Certificate, the only one of its kind in the region for mental health professionals who are interested in applying culturally responsive counseling skills with Spanish speaking populations. She’s was also a part of the department’s Integrated Behavioral Healthcare Certificate, as well as a Graduate Teaching Certificate. Furthermore, Dr. Trepal played a role in the creation of two different master’s degree programs – a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Master of Education in School Counseling, each of which welcomes anywhere between 100-150 new graduate students a year.
In her new role, she will be overseeing and improving COEHD admissions processes, program assessment, accreditation, scheduling, advising, retention, reinstatements, enrollment, and student affairs – all of which require great logistical finesse and technical understanding of academic policies in general.
Dr. Trepal is the recipient of various professional awards that speak to her tremendous leadership in building high-quality programs.
Dr. Trepal shared the following regarding this new chapter in her career: “I am excited about the opportunity to serve the COEHD in this capacity and am committed to supporting our students' academic success and professional development. I look forward to working collaboratively with Dean Torres and our faculty, staff, students, and community to support our advancement as a model HSI, R1, urban-serving institution.”

I hope this email finds each of you well as this semester winds down.
With the strong support of COEHD and ELPS, I'm pleased to announce that we are running our first ever undergraduate education ethics and law course this summer, as we prepare to offer this course (in its 2 sch version) starting this fall. This is a three hour course, EDU 4953, titled Special Studies in Education Law & Ethics, that will be offered during the first 5 week summer session in June and early July. Starting in the fall, the EDU 3002 course titled Ethical and Legal Foundations in Education will be a regular offering in the new BA in Equity in Education program. This is a huge step for the COEHD, and I'm grateful to the COEHD to be a part of this course offering.
For summer 2022, please find attached a pdf and a png of the "advertisement" for the course. Please share widely with your undergraduate students; please also let them know that the only prerequisite is instructor approval.
In an era where nearly everything that goes on in public education has the potential for litigation, and where public education is increasingly being attacked, preparing our teacher candidates and others who otherwise have an interest in public education has never been more important. Thank you in advance for sharing this information and please have a successful wind down of the semester and a great summer!

ABA at UTSA will be holding Camp Durango for the second year in a row. This summer camp for children with autism and their siblings focuses on fostering communication, social and adaptive skills through applied behavior analysis (ABA). It is part of ABA at UTSA, a group of university faculty, staff, and students who conduct research and complete service projects to support the field of behavior analysis within the local community.

It’s been nearly two years since Sonya Alemán introduced a course at the University of Texas at San Antonio about the late, legendary Tejano singer Selena. … The course uses Selena’s story as a prism to examine the Mexican American experience, in all its contradictory glory. Alemán traces the class’s genesis to 2015, when she was teaching a UTSA course, Latino Cultural Expressions, which surveyed all the cultural products that have come out of Latino communities. “Selena filtered into so many of those conversations,” Alemán said.

Oral history project preserves San Antonio’s West Side Sound

During the 1950s and ’60s, San Antonio’s West Side was the site of a unique musical phenomenon. Teens from the mostly Latino neighborhood started forming bands that played with some of the soul of Detroit’s Motown acts, but with distinctly Texan accents. The West Side Sound, as it came to be known, developed organically. Now, more than a half-century after the scene reached its summit, cultural historians at the University of Texas at San Antonio are compiling an oral history archive to preserve memories of the music and the people behind it.

Texas’ ‘wild west’ teacher prep landscape could make teacher shortage worse

The road for budding educators in Texas is a sprawling landscape of universities, nonprofits and companies getting teachers into the classroom – with minimal state requirements and feeble oversight. Of those many paths, the for-profit, online route is experiencing meteoric growth and pumping out the largest number of candidates as the state faces a teacher shortage crisis. That can contribute to more turnover on campuses, unsupported educators and students left in a lurch.

For nearly 20 years, the WSI has served as a leading voice for inclusiveness in the college and greater university community and has provided “access to interdisciplinary knowledge about women, gender, and sexuality through the fostering of transdisciplinary collaboration among researchers and through public programming to make new research accessible to wide audiences, including South Texas community and beyond.” Dr. Aleman is deeply committed to advancing the mission and goals of this important institute and to her credit she has achieved a considerable amount in her role as interim including chairing the El Mundo Zurdo Conference, planning the activities of a successful Women’s History Month, and coordinating aims of the WSI with the Democratizing Racial Justice (DRJ) project. Nationally, Dr. Aleman is a top scholar in the field of Latino/a communication/media studies and Chicana feminism and Chicano/a studies. She is currently lead editor for Chicana/Latina Studies: The Journal of Mujeres Activas en Letras u Cambios Social. Her skills, interests, and background are an ideal fit for the institute’s priorities. I look forward to a thriving future for this important institute under her leadership.
