Subject: 30 to R1 Graduate School Celebration
Dear Colleagues,
Our 30 to R1 event is just around the corner as we celebrate 30 years of doctoral success leading to UTSA’s R1 designation! As you know, we have alumni from each of our doctoral programs all the way back from the start of their programs joining us for this grand two-day celebration on April 3 and 4 on campus. We’ve planned a number of exciting activities throughout the day on April 3 for campus-wide festivities including a research symposium, keynote address by a distinguished speaker and other networking events to showcase UTSA’s advancement.
We want to show our alumni and current students how highly doctoral education is valued and supported at UTSA. With this in mind, we want to promote the event widely. We are therefore requesting your assistance in sharing the details of the event with all faculty and staff. Could you please share the attached invitation with your faculty and staff?
We appreciate all the work you have done and in sharing this invitation. Please reach out to me or any Graduate School staff if you have any questions about this event.
Regards,
The Graduate School Team
Join us on April 3!

Samantha Sifuentes and Eric Uriegas
by Laura Earleywine
Dear COEHD Faculty and Staff,
It is with mixed emotions that we share the news two of our student development specialists have accepted new positions as Retention and Graduate Program Coordinators with the Graduate School. Sam and Eric are a part of our UTSA COEHD family both have served COEHD Faculty, Staff and Students well.
Samantha Sifuentes
Samantha Sifuentes has been working as a Student Development Specialist since summer 2017. Interestingly Sam was an undergraduate student here at UTSA and actually started working within the COEHD as a work-study within the Department of Counseling back in 2013 and in One Stop for a while before starting with COEHD. Sam has assisted every department at the Downtown Campus. She served as Student Development Specialist for Educational Psychology, she assisted with duties within the Department of Counseling and even filled in as Student Development Specialist for Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS). Sam also completed her Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from the ELPS Department. Sam will be missed and we appreciate her years of service to both Graduate Studies and the College.
Eric Uriegas
Eric Uriegas started with the College in summer 2019. Eric had worked as an Elementary School Teacher and Recruitment Specialist for Urban Teachers. Eric's primary roles have been with the Department of Bicultural/Bilingual Studies and Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching. Eric is also a second-year student in the Ph.D. in Educational Leadership - Higher Ed Concentration program within the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS). We appreciate Eric's years of service to both Graduate Studies and the College. Luckily, we will continue to see Eric in COEHD as a continuing student in his doctoral program.
We will honor both Sam and Eric during our spring college wide meeting.
Please join me in thanking and congratulating them on their new roles in the UTSA community.

by Laura Earleywine
Good Evening COEHD Faculty:
It is that time again of the year to start selecting nominees for the Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award (ROTA). The awards are a symbol of the importance placed on the provision of teaching and learning of the highest order. The awards are offered in recognition of those who serve our students in an exemplary manner and as an incentive for others who aspire to such service.
The website describing this opportunity is here: Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards | University of Texas System (utsystem.edu)<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.uts...>

Application packets will be no longer than 50 pages in length and must include the ROTA Application form<https://www.utsystem.edu/sites/default/files/sites/ut-online-consortium/R...>, which asks for the following:
* A Table of Contents that hyperlinks to all sections of the application packet
* Nominee's name and job title (ex: John Doe, Ph.D., Associate Professor and University Distinguished Teacher Professor)
* Department
* Institution
* Contact information, including mailing address, phone number, and email address.
* Demographic information
o Gender
o Race/Ethnicity
* Mandatory: The mandatory section of the written section should not exceed 25 pages, and should include:
o Curriculum Vitae

o Plan for disseminating methodologies/innovations (see bullet below)
o Letters of Support from Department Chair and/or College Dean, Peer Faculty, and Former Students
o The remaining pages (i.e., Supplemental section) of the written document are available at the nominee's discretion and could include student evaluations (written comments and/or numerical section), evidence of the effectiveness of methodologies/innovations developed (prior to or during the pandemic), and other materials.
Supplemental: The supplemental section is in addition to the written portion and should not exceed 25 pages (the overall application packet should not exceed 50 pages). While it is not required, the supplemental section may be used by the selection committee to make decisions. In the supplemental section, applicants are welcome to include:
o Video(s) - Limit of 3-5 minutes in total.
o Multimedia
o Digital - personal website, LinkedIn profile, etc.

* Applications must include a plan for disseminating methodologies and innovations to other faculty within their university and across UT System institutions and beyond (i.e., shows leadership and commitment). This implementation plan should be written in future tense and focused on innovative ways a nominee could share this information, rather than what one is currently doing. Reviewers will consider the medium of delivery (i.e., video, social media, etc.) as well as the intended audiences (e.g., fellow faculty members, systemwide groups focused on teaching and learning, and state and national audiences).
* All pages are required to be numbered; additionally, we want to underscore the requirement for headers in the table of contents to be hyperlinked to corresponding sections of the application packet.

Good morning,
The IIMS and the UTSA College for Health, Community, and Policy (HCaP) are seeking proposals for the 2023 Community Engagement Small Project Grants program. Our goal is to promote, develop, and expand community and academic research partnerships for the translation of science from basic discovery to clinical practice, to public health benefit. 1. Community-engaged research or assessment
2. Education or training
3. Dissemination of research results, program features, or policy implications
Applications will be accepted from community-campus research partnerships in South Texas. We define campus (academic) partners as faculty and/or students who provide technical and/or research support for the development of projects that address community-identified health priorities. Applications should include at least one UT Health San Antonio investigator who will serve as PI or Co-Investigator. Campus partners may represent one or more of the following institutions:
• UT Health San Antonio (1 representative required)

Seminar Opportunity with Olga Torres
by Zaid Haddad
[Image]Hello colleagues!
I am sending this message on behalf of Dr. Kalinec-Craig, who is on development leave this semester. We have an exciting opportunity this semester for you and your students. We are thrilled to virtually host Olga Torres, a retired elementary bilingual education teacher from Tucson, Arizona, who theorized the Rights of the Learner (e.g., the right to be confused; to make a mistake; to speak, listen, and be heard; to write, do, and represent what makes sense to you) and has inspired us at UTSA to incorporate this into our program and curriculum. Señora Torres will share pivotal experiences as a bilingual educator and how we can reimagine classrooms as humanizing and democratic spaces where all children have the right to thrive.
Details and a flyer are included below, please sign up if you are interested and please encourage your students to join us by signing up also. The Zoom link for the seminar will be emailed to registrants prior to the event.

Since the late 1980s, Women’s History Month has celebrated the contributions women have made to history, culture, and society and has recognized the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history. The UTSA theme for Women’s History Month 2023 is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.”
At UTSA, the Women’s Studies Institute<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Futsa.us...> has proudly hosted one of the country’s largest Women’s History Month campus celebrations over the past decade and a half. Guided by an annual theme, the month-long series features scholars, award-winning authors, filmmakers, and community leaders. Events are open to the public and so they connect hundreds of students from across campus to the larger San Antonio community.
