Please encourage any of your students who engaged in summer research at UTSA or an REU to register to participate in this year’s summer showcase. Deadline for registration is Monday, July 24 2023 at 11:59 PM. Lunch will be provided for all participating students. Final schedule and room location will be announced next week.

Today, the Institute for Education Sciences of the US Department of Education announced grant competitions being held for the late summer period (and one to be announced in the fall).

From the Federal Register posting:
Institute of Education Sciences (IES) intends to provide national leadership in expanding knowledge and understanding of (1) developmental and school readiness outcomes for infants and toddlers with or at risk for a disability, (2) education outcomes for all learners from early childhood education through postsecondary and adult education, and (3) employment and wage outcomes when relevant (such as for those engaged in career and technical, postsecondary, or adult education). The IES research grant programs are designed to provide interested individuals and the general public with reliable and valid information about education practices that support learning and improve academic achievement and access to education opportunities for all learners. These interested individuals include parents, educators, learners, researchers, and policymakers. In carrying out its grant programs, IES provides support for programs of research in areas of demonstrated national need. In awarding research training grant programs, IES aims to prepare individuals to conduct rigorous and relevant education and special education research that advances knowledge within the field and addresses issues important to education policymakers and practitioners.
NCER Competition
The Education Research Competition (ALN 84.305A).
Under this competition, NCER will consider only applications that address one of the following topics:
• Career and Technical Education.
• Civics Education and Social Studies.
• Cognition and Student Learning.
• Early Learning Programs and Policies.
• Improving Education Systems.
• Literacy.
• Policies, Practices, and Programs to Support English Learners.
• Postsecondary and Adult Education.
• Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education.
• Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Context for Teaching and Learning.
• Teaching, Teachers, and the Education Workforce.
NCSER Competitions
The Special Education Research Competition (ALN 84.324A).
Under this competition, NCSER encourages a broad range of research, including studies that may have more than one research focus (such as reading and behavior) and may focus broadly on students with disabilities or on a particular disability (such as autism spectrum disorders). The range of research supported through this program includes, but is not limited to, programs to improve child development and school readiness; academic and/or behavioral interventions; instructional practices and/or professional development programs for teachers and other school-based personnel; strategies for improving the family support and engagement critical to the success of students with disabilities; policies and systems-level interventions and programs to address school finance, school-community collaborations, or school structures that affect educational progress for students with disabilities; transition from secondary school to postsecondary education, career, and/or independent living; as well as access to, persistence in, and completion of postsecondary education.

Dear Colleague,
Please be aware that this is a critical week for technology upgrades for UTSA faculty and staff.
On Wednesday, July 19 at 2 p.m., UTS will be launching a new UTSA Virtual Private Network (VPN) Service that will replace the current version.
* If you are using a UTSA-issued computer, you will see a new application called "GlobalProtect." You will receive instructions for signing in to this application to use the UTSA VPN
* If you are using a personal device, you will need to download the GlobalProtect application and follow instructions for signing in to use the UTSA VPN.
Note: if you have already begun using the new VPN service, you will need to change the GlobalProtect domain to "vpn.utsa.edu" at or after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19.
On Friday, July 21, beginning at 8 a.m. and lasting until 10 p.m., UTS will be conducting maintenance on the S:\ Drive.
* During this period, users will be unable to access the S:\ Drive network.
* After this period, shortcuts and network paths using UNC mapping will need to be re-established/remapped. Instructions will be provided and help from Tech Café will be available during normal business hours.
On Friday, July 21, beginning at 5 p.m. and lasting until Sunday, July 23 at 2 p.m., UTS will be conducting key maintenance all Banner production systems.
* During this period, users will be unable to access ASAP, AppWorx, Banner, DegreeWorks, and Xtender.
To offer the best possible service, we must regularly update and perform necessary maintenance on UTSA systems and networks. Some of these maintenance activities require that affected services be shut down or sustain intermittent service interruptions. While this work is essential, we also recognize that it may present an inconvenience to our users. We thank you for your patience as we work to provide a better user experience with technology services. Congratulations, Kristina, on this new phase of your career! You took a chance on the COEHD when you joined the first group of Student Development Specialists, and in the 18 years you’ve served in this role, you’ve been absolutely critical to the success of the program!
As a former elementary classroom teacher, I am thrilled to hear that you’ll be a 3rd grade teacher in East Central ISD! The children and families with whom you’ll be working, are indeed fortunate!

It is with mixed emotions that we announce that Kristina Talamantez, Student Development Specialist in Counseling, last day with COEHD is Monday, July 24th.
Kristina started as one of the original Student Development Specialists (SDS) back in November 2005 after graduating from UTSA a few years prior with a BA in American Studies and later completing a master’s degree in counseling from Texas A&M Kingsville. In 2005 Kristina began her COEHD career within the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching as the SDS for the Department. In 2007, Kristina transitioned to the Department of Counseling (or at that time the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Adult and Higher Education). Kristina quickly became a critical part of the department and has assisted thousands of students to graduate and pursue their LPCs, certifications in school counseling, and careers in counselor education and supervision.
We want to thank Kristina for her dedicated almost 18 years of service to the college and wish her continued success in her new role as a third grade teacher in East Central ISD!
