It has been a difficult and stressful past few weeks for the college. Selfcare is absolutely a priority during these periods. I’m pleased to share we have arranged a group session this Wednesday afternoon, 3:00-4:00 for all interested COEHD faculty and staff. Hello,
On Friday, May 2 from 10-11 am the UTSA Digital Accessibility Team will be hosting a training titled, “A Practical Introduction to Title II Compliance” via Zoom for COEHD.
This session is open to all faculty and staff, and we strongly encourage your participation. You will gain foundational knowledge on accessibility practices that support ADA Title II compliance, with a focus on practical tools and strategies.

Cristie is a UTSA alumna who holds a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Early Childhood and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Reading. Urgent Funding Opportunity: Rapid Response Bridge Funding Program.

In response to recent federal grant cancellations—including terminated NSF awards—the Spencer Foundation, in collaboration with the Kapor Foundation, William T. Grant Foundation, and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, has launched a Rapid Response Bridge Funding Program.

* Grant Amount: Up to $25,000 (no indirect costs)
* Purpose: To support scholars in STEM and education research (e.g., AI, CS, MSIs, inequality reduction) affected by NSF terminations. Funding may support data collection/analysis, writing, community engagement, or new proposal development.
* Eligibility: Must have had a recently cancelled NSF grant; early-career scholars prioritized.

Dear COEHD Faculty and Staff,
Since this tragic news has become available, you might find yourself in a position to support students or additional campus community members. Wellness 360’s<https://screening.mentalhealthscreening.org/utsa> counseling staff and the Employee Assistance Program<https://www.utsa.edu/hr/eap/> can help.
Wellness 360<https://screening.mentalhealthscreening.org/utsa> provides in-person counseling at the Recreation Wellness Center (RWC 1.500) during campus business hours and (210) 458-4142. Also, 24/7 telephone emergency crisis counseling is available for students’ needs through TimelyCare by calling the Crisis Helpline at 210-458-4140. Please share the PowerPoint slides with your students.
Let me emphasize again the importance to acknowledging the event and promoting positive habits for managing mental health and stress. Here are some tips when talking with students and colleagues:
* Acknowledge the tragedy. Say something like, “I know what happened might be on your mind now.”
* Allow students or your colleagues to share their concerns. You might say, “You may be experiencing a wide range of feelings and emotions right now. If you’d like to share those, feel welcome to do so.”
* Realize that it is common to see a variety of reactions, including being unable to focus or concentrate, feeling frustrated, angry, guilty, remorseful, or numb.
* Share applicable resources such as counseling, EAP, support groups, etc.
* If applicable check-in on individuals with known risk factors, such as health or mental health conditions, other recent losses, closest friends.
* Acknowledge all information and answers may not become available.
* Encourage grief processes that are best fit for individual/group, such as prayer, fundraising, letter writing, advocacy, other support, celebrations, etc.

COEHD Response and Resources

Dear COEHD Community,
As I shared in a prior communication, Dr. Zaid Haddad was taken into custody by the FBI at UTSA’s Main Campus earlier this week. UTSA has confirmed that he is under criminal investigation for charges unrelated to the university. This is a challenging time for all of us, especially for you, our COEHD community.
We understand the circumstances have been unsettling and want to assure you that COEHD is working to make resources available to support your needs both academically and personally. Below is a comprehensive list of assistance available to help you manage the emotional and mental impact of these events and general updates on ongoing efforts within the college.
Student Resources Available:
* COEHD arranged walk-in appointments for our students with Wellness 360 in the Recreation Wellness Center (RWC) 1.500 on Friday May 2nd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
* Additional group sessions for all students are being scheduled for the coming weeks, with days/times being communicated via COEHD communications and social media channels.
* If you need assistance at other times of the day or prefer virtual support, please see the attached flyer on how to access 24/7 Timely Care<https://utsacloud-my.sharepoint.com/:b:/g/personal/heather_trepal_utsa_ed...>.
* Students should utilize Student Wellbeing Services<https://www.utsa.edu/students/wellbeing/> to connect with counseling services and 24/7 assistance.
* Faculty are being encouraged to hold space in class for acknowledgement, conversations, and open discussions during this difficult time.
Faculty/Staff Resources and information:
* Faculty and staff have access to the Employee Assistance Program<https://www.utsa.edu/people-excellence/current-employees/benefits/eap.html> which provides a wide variety of counseling services.
* Dr. Haddad's roles and responsibilities, including his courses, have been reassigned.
* Wellbeing services have already visited affected classes and will continue to do so as necessary.
* Wellbeing services is holding group sessions for ILT faculty and staff.
* Additional group sessions for all faculty and staff are being scheduled for the coming weeks, with days/times being communicated via COEHD communications and social media channels.
* We are working with campus partners to address the nuance of the unfolding situation in compliance with university procedures and will provide updates as they become available.
* We are in communication with our district and community partners and are working to support their wellbeing during this time.
Additional notes:
* We are sending separate correspondence to COEHD students acknowledging the situation, emphasizing their wellbeing is our top priority, and providing information regarding counseling services and future COEHD group sessions.
* A follow-up email will be shared with faculty shortly with tips to navigate a difficult event. We strongly encourage you take time in your classes to address the situation openly and authentically. Students will appreciate a space to voice their feelings and thoughts which may help with their coping and healing.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us directly for support. We as a community need to support one another through this difficult time.
