Greetings Colleagues,
I am forwarding the December 2022 Research Development & Grant Writing Newsletter by
Academic Research Funding Strategies, LLC. The newsletter is provided through a
subscription by the Office of the Vice President for Research, Economic Development, and
Knowledge Enterprise (REDKE) solely for the use of the UTSA community. Although you may
share it with your students, please do not post it on a public website or disseminate it
outside the UTSA community.
Among the articles and features in this issue are:
December 2022 Select List of Humanities, HSS, and Arts Opportunities & News – We list
funding opportunities for scholars in the humanities, social sciences and the arts.
New/Ongoing NEH Calls for Proposals related to the “American Tapestry” Initiative – NEH
has announced a special initiative designed to address some of the big challenges facing
our country. We discuss associated funding opportunities.
NSF Opportunities for Selected Social Science and Humanities Research – We discuss NSF’s
Social Psychology program.
NSF Observations on Plagiarism – We discuss what NSF views as constituting plagiarism
along recent examples and consequences.
The New NSF Major Research Instrumentation Solicitation – NSF has issued a new MRI
solicitation with important changes. We discuss those changes and report on NSF’s recent
MRI Town Hall webinar.
Do You Speak Your Funding Agency’s Language? – A key to writing successful proposals is
understanding the funder, including speaking their language. We discuss how to do that.
Understanding the Role of Your PO – The roles of program officers can differ depending on
the funder. We discuss how PO roles can differ, and why PIs need to understand those
differences (reprinted from the Aug. 2016 issue).
Understanding Peer Review In the Humanities – We discuss how reviewers in the humanities
judge your proposal (reprinted from the Aug. 2020 issue).
What’s the Problem? What’s Your Solution? – We discuss how to answer these key questions
in the first page of your proposal (reprinted from the Aug. 2020 issue).
If you would like to discuss any of the information in the newsletter in preparation for a
grant submission, please let me know.
Also, National Science Foundation will be adhering to the new guidelines in their Proposal
& Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) as of January 30, 2023:
https://beta.nsf.gov/policies/pappg/23-1
Moving forward, the RSC will be enforcing the 15-5-2 rule for submission of grant
applications starting January:
https://research.utsa.edu/ospa/15-5-2-rule.html. This means
they will require submission of a Notice of Intent through the PI's research dashboard
15 days before the sponsor's deadline; budget, budget justification, and draft
narrative within 5 days of application deadline; and all application components no later
than 8:30 a.m. two (2) business days prior to the submission deadline date. I pledge to
support PIs in meeting these deadlines.
Thank you.
