UTSA’s Educational Research Training Program: P-20 Pipeline Issue

The Child and Adolescent Policy Research Institute (CAPRI) at the University of Texas at
San Antonio (UTSA) will fund 12 undergraduate students to support education research
training that promotes diversity and prepares underrepresented students for doctoral
study. The UTSA Educational Research Training Program: P-20 Pipeline Issues will provide
students, especially students from underrepresented backgrounds, with an introduction to
education science research and scientific methods, meaningful opportunities to participate
in education research studies, networking and professional development and mentoring that
leads to doctoral study. Funding for this training program is provided by the Institute of
Education Sciences’ Pathways to the Education Sciences Research Training program (Award
#R305B160008).
AY 2017-18 Alvarez International Study Fund Request for

In an effort to enhance understanding of Mexico and Latin America, the Carlos and Malú
Alvarez International Study Fund, offers scholarships and enrichment funds to defray the
cost to students participating in UTSA Study Abroad programs. Programs must involve travel
to one the following areas: unrestricted regions of Mexico, Central or South America. The
International Study Fund is directly supported by distributions from the Carlos and Malú
Alvarez Endowment for Student Success. The endowment goal is to directly benefit the
student recipients and encourage participation in study abroad activities, thus the funds
cannot be used for program related expenses, such as faculty stipends, travel, and
educational materials.

The University of Texas at San Antonio will be closed on Monday, May 29 in observance of
Memorial Day. All operations will resume on Tuesday, May 30.
JPL - East Entrance Shut Down for
Repairs<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/jpl_eas...
The JPL east entrance will be shut-down from May 31, 2017 to June 4, 2017 for stucco
repairs. The entrance will reopen for use following completion of repairs on June 4th. For
additional information please contact the Facilities Service Center at 458-4262.

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies honored current students and
alumni during their Outstanding Alumni and Scholarship Awards ceremony at Topgolf on
Saturday, May 20. The department presented Dr. Brian Woods, superintendent of Northside
ISD, and Donnie Whited, principal of Estrada Achievement Center, with an Outstanding
Alumni Award. The department also presented Carrie Gray, Ashley Brady, and Darlene Roebuck
with scholarships.

Two researchers from the University of Texas at San Antonio are creating a database
highlighting educator discipline after they are accused of improper relationships. The
researchers hope to get a deeper understanding of the epidemic of these allegations in the
state of Texas. "There are 222 kids from last year and their families whose lives
have been turned upside down," said Dr. David Thompson, a professor of educational
leadership at UTSA. The Texas Education Agency opened 222 investigations in the fiscal
year 2015-2016 alone that involved inappropriate relationships between educators and
students.

UTSA is getting ready to begin work on the new Science and Engineering Building (SEB), the
largest construction project in university history. The building will create classrooms,
study spaces, teaching laboratories and research facilities for UTSA's science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs.

Ximenes Ave., at UTSA Blvd., will be shut down to one entry and one exit lane from May 22,
2017 to August 17, 2017 as part of the construction project to realign the road.
Barricades and fencing will be placed in and around the closures to assist with vehicular
traffic. The road is expected to reopen to two entry and exit lanes by start of the fall

Toyota awards $1.7 million grant to San Antonio’s Southwest

Toyota’s charitable foundation granted $1.7 million Monday for classroom equipment backing
science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, programs at Southwest Independent
School District’s new high school. The grant by the Toyota USA Foundation, the culmination
of a year and a half of work, will go to Southwest Legacy High School, which is set to
open in August, Toyota spokesman Mario Lozoya said. It is Toyota’s largest contribution so
far to a school system in Texas, Toyota spokeswoman Melissa Sparks said in an email.
Southwest Legacy is preparing to become the second San Antonio school designated a Center
for Applied Science and Technology, or CAST school.
