COEHD professor nominated for national book
award<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/coehd_pro...
Dr. Rosalind Horowitz, professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and
Teaching, has been nominated for the prestigious Edward Fry Book Award of the national
Literacy Research Association (LRA) for her book, "The Achievement Gap in Reading:
Complex causes, persistent issues, possible solutions." The book was coedited with S.
Jay Samuels, professor emeritus at The University of Minnesota—Twin Cities. Contributors
to the volume devoted 50 to 65 years in scholarly research on equity and opportunity in
student achievement. Nominations were made by Routledge/Taylor & Francis Publishers
and a faculty member at Penn State University.

Last month, a study made headlines with negative news about a popular program known as
dual credit. Dual credit is a model program that allows qualified high school students to
enroll in college courses and simultaneously earn college and high school credit. It’s
popular with students because it allows them to get a head-start on college, reduce the
cost of college tuition and complete their degrees sooner.

Josie Méndez-Negrete is a sociologist and associate professor of Mexican American studies
at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Her adult son, Robert Lopez, 47, is
schizophrenic. Her 2015 book, “A Life on Hold: Living with Schizophrenia,” recounts their
efforts to cope and live with mental illness.

Many students are beginning to move into the University of Texas at San Antonio, which
means campus and traffic will be even busier over the next few days. Friday marks the
start of Roadrunner Days, a 9-day celebration where students take part in activities and
