Greetings Colleagues,
There are three items from NSF that I would like to bring to your attention. I know that
some of you may think NSF to be a stretch for your particular fields or interests, but as
these three deal with (1) education and workforce development to increase the
understanding of clean energy; (2) language diversity relating to behavioral sciences and
linguistics; and (3) funding conferences that promote equity and diversity, you might
consider ways in which they resonate with your work. The first two are applications using
the Dear Colleague Letter funding mechanism. The Clean Energy Technology DCL is initiated
with a brief concept paper to an NSF program officer. The Stimulating Diversification in
Language Science Research expands thinking in several Division of Behavioral and Cognitive
Sciences grant competition areas. Finally, there is a Webinar that will be held next week
for the NSF GRANTED competition .

Of interest of COEHD faculty is area “f”. Namely, Education and workforce development
efforts: Example topics include understanding of workforce education and training needs;
broadening participation opportunities; and new pedagogical approaches in order to advance
and strengthen the U.S. competitiveness in the research areas listed above. A project’s
scope may span from preK-12 through graduate school and career levels. Example efforts
across different career and education levels include, but are not limited to, developing
new curricula or teaching materials in clean energy, building partnerships with
stakeholders to share data or software tools aiming to improve learning of clean energy
concepts, partnerships with the private sector or government research institutions to
create new training opportunities, involving undergraduate students in research, offering
faculty or professional development workshops for experiential learning of clean energy
concepts and applications, designing novel approaches to helping researchers and graduate
students to understand lab-to-market processes, or building transfer pathways from
community colleges to 4-year colleges.
A three-page concept paper and one-half page budget to a program officer initiates the
application process.

The following paragraph from the DCL illustrates what topics are to be addressed in terms
of “Diversification”. Examples of possible topics suitable for this Dear Colleague Letter
(DCL) include but are not limited to: language science in variable contexts (e.g.,
acquisition in bilingual/multilingual or bi-dialectical communities); effects of
socioeconomic status on language development; effects of language, culture and experience
on cognition; neuroscientific studies within diverse language communities; and effects of
cross-linguistic variation on language processing. In their proposals, PIs should follow
scientifically guided approaches to diversity (e.g., a cross-linguistic comparison study
with well-founded scientific motivation) and clearly explain why the specific approaches
to diversification or integration in the proposal will have an impact on developing more
generalizable theories of language development, the mechanisms of language learning and
processing or the neural basis of language.

* Perception, Action, and Cognition—May 15 2023 - June 15, 2023 – Window (The May-June
proposal window is only for conference proposals, not for research proposals. Proposals
for conferences that will be held less than one year after submission may be returned
without review.) July 15 2023 - August 1, 2023 – Window (The July-August proposal window
is for research proposals only. Conference proposals should not be submitted during this
submission window.)

Growing Research Access for Nationally Transformative Equity and Diversity (GRANTED)
provides support for symposia, conferences, and meetings to address systemic barriers
within the nation’s research enterprise by improving research support and service capacity
at emerging research institutions. GRANTED is a whole-of-NSF approach that will transform
NSF and the science and engineering community to develop the collective knowledge, skills,
talents and desire to serve within the nation’s science and engineering enterprise.
