[Coehd] AAS event Beyond February Lecture, Dr. Huckaby

Dear COEHD Faculty and Staff, BLACK ACTIVISM is part of the Beyond February Lecture Series sponsored by UTSA African American Studies and Consortium for Social Transformation in the College of Education and Human Development, presented by Dr. M. Francyne Huckaby. The event is today at 6 pm in the University Center Denman Room (2.01.28). M. Francyne Huckaby is Associate Professor, Director of the Center for Public Education, and Core Faculty of Women and Gender Studies at Texas Christian University. She is currently working with faculty and students to establish African American and Africana Studies as well as Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies at TCU. Her scholarship and teaching merge the theoretical, philosophical, and historical with attention to tacit knowledges formed by culture, context, and current moments to create openings for anti-oppressive discourses and practices. Her current research on community organizing and resistance to neoliberal education reform puts filmmaking to work in research analysis and presentation (see vimeo.com/FilmsPeople<http://vimeo.com/FilmsPeople>;). Her work appears in International Review of Qualitative Research, Qualitative Inquiry, International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, Educational Philosophy and Theory, The Journal of Curriculum Theorizing, Handbook of Public Pedagogy, Women and Pedagogy: Education through Autobiographical Narrative, and Duoethnography: Dialogic Methods for Social, Health, and Educational Research. Her honors include the TCU Deans' Teaching Award for the College of Education, TCU Mortar Board Preferred Professor, and Straight for Equality from Fort Worth's PFLAG chapter. She received the Outstanding Dissertation of the Year (AERA, Qualitative Research SIG) for Challenging the Hegemony in Education: Specific Parrhesiastic Scholars, Care of the Self, and Relations of Power. She loves to travel and returned to Papua New Guinea in 2011 where she lived and worked with six South Foré villages as a Peace Corps volunteer in the late 1990s.
