Vincent Carales and Eyra Perez Texas Association of Chicana/os in Higher Education
(TACHE) Graduate Fellowship Award Texas Association of Chicana/os in Higher Education
Vincent Carales and Eyra Perez, doctoral students in the Department of Educational
Leadership and Policy Studies, were recently awarded the 2017 Texas Association of
Chicana/os in Higher Education (TACHE) Graduate Fellowship Award. Their TACHE Graduate
Fellowship Award will be presented at the 42nd Annual TACHE Conference, February 26-March
1, 2017 to be held at Wyndham Garden Hotel in Austin, Texas.

Amid a fundraising campaign for the first of five career-themed high schools backed by
H-E-B, plans are taking shape for a second such school, to be located on the South Side.
Another Center for Applied Science and Technology would open in August 2018 as a
partnership between the Southwest Independent School District, Palo Alto College, H-E-B
and local employers. The curriculum would focus on advanced manufacturing, engineering,
global enterprise, logistics and energy.

When Ashley Labay began applying for positions as a behavior therapist, she didn’t have to
look far. The recent University of Texas at San Antonio graduate spent the summer and fall
semesters completing an internship at the newly established Autism Treatment Center clinic
at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and knew after months of working with area kids
that she wanted to stay in the Alamo City, preferably right where she was. “I thought
about moving to Houston or back to Lake Jackson, where I’m from,” she says. “But I’ve had
such a great experience here. I love this environment.”
