Dr. Lorena Claeys, executive director of the college's Academy for Teacher Excellence
(ATE), received the 2016 Higher Education Honoree award from the Texas Association for
Bilingual Education (TABE). The award was established to honor outstanding individuals
that have earned the recognition, respect, and admiration of bilingual educators and their
community. She was presented with the award at the TABE annual conference in Galveston,

Giant Traveling Map of Texas in Classroom for

Professional Development Workshop Institute of Texan Cultures
Use a bit of novelty to get your students excited about geography! The Texas Alliance for
Geographic Education is coming Saturday, November 5 to teach us about their Giant
Traveling Map of Texas. This awesome program rents out giant 12.5 - 20 foot vinyl floor
maps that your students can use to explore the cultures, geographies, and history of Texas
in interactive, physical, and spatial activities. Join us on Saturday, November 5, and the
TAGE team will demonstrate the different ways to utilize the map in your classroom and
provide TEKs oriented learning materials. Come and explore Texas in a whole new way!
Rental fees for the Giant Traveling Map are usually $50-$75 (depending on the size) but
the ITC will be paying the rental fee for teachers who attend the workshop. We'll make
sure you can bring the map to your classroom, for free!

Horowitz selected to new UTSA journal editorial

Rosalind Horowitz UTSA Journal of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Works
Dr. Rosalind Horowitz, a professor in the Departments of Interdisciplinary Learning and
Teaching and Educational Psychology, has been selected to serve on the Editorial Board,
representing the College of Education and Human Development, for the new UTSA Journal of
Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Works. Dr. Horowitz has collaborated with
undergraduates in the COEHD, on research on persuasion of seven-year olds and presented
this research at The UTSA Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry Showcase on April
21, 2016. This work has been accepted for the first issue of the new undergraduate
research journal.

Texas Language Education Research Conference
The deadline to submit a proposal to the 2017 Texas Language Education Research Conference
(February 17-18, 2017) is Monday, October 31. For more information, visit

Interested participants are encouraged to submit a proposal for one of the following
session types:
60-minute Poster Presentation
Posters will be on display during the conference, and a separate conference session will
be dedicated to presenters to explain their work and answer questions. Posters can be used
to gain valuable feedback on theses, dissertations, or research. This is a good format for
describing a work in progress, or a new process or idea.
20-minute Research-Based or Practice-Oriented Presentation
• Research-Based Presentation: A 20 minute formal talk addressing a small audience
followed by a 5 minute Q&A/discussion. It might be original empirical research as well
as an original theoretical investigation.
• Practice-Oriented Presentation: A 20 minute practical or “hands-on” presentation by the
presenter(s) followed by a 5 minute Q&A/discussion. It can be a practical
demonstration of a theory, or an application of pedagogical methodology still in the
developmental stage.
45-minute Practice-Oriented Presentation
• Workshop: A 45 minute practical demonstration of a theory or an application of a
pedagogical methodology, followed by a short Q&A/discussion. Presenter(s) should
engage the audience through experiential learning techniques
