Schools Are Falling Short for Many
English-Learners<http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2017/03/08/schools-...
by COREY MITCHELL - Education Week | Pub: 03/08
Schools often provide substandard instruction and social-emotional support to the
nation's English-learners—and fail to properly train the educators who teach them.
Those blunt findings—from the prestigious National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and
Medicine—are in a new study that explores why limited English skills remain a substantial
barrier to academic success for roughly 5 million children. "These children are here.
If we don't educate them and prepare them for being future citizens and part of our
communities, we're doing a disservice to our country," said Harriet Romo, the
director of the Child and Adolescent Policy Research Institute at the University of Texas
at San Antonio and a member of the Committee on Fostering School Success for English
Learners, the group that produced the report.
City begins improvements to stretch of Frio Street near UTSA downtown
campus<http://www.ksat.com/news/city-begins-improvements-to-stretch-of...
by CHRIS SHADROCK - KSAT | Pub: 03/08
Several blocks of Frio Street will be a little hard to navigate over the coming months as
the city makes improvements they say will increase safety. The improvements will run along
Frio Street from Cesar Chavez to Houston streets near the University of Texas at San
Antonio Downtown Campus. The $5 million project will add bike lanes, wider sidewalks, a
safer crosswalk for students and other traffic signal improvements. Because the area is
designated a cultural zone, there will also be additional streetscaping to promote foot
traffic.

Rainy day doesn’t stop Woman’s Day March

by JENNIFER HILLER - San Antonio Express-News | Pub: 03/06
At the end of the route, as people gathered to hear speakers, archivists from the
University of Texas at San Antonio held their own signs: “Donate Signs Here UTSA
Archives.” “Even if they’re wet, we’ll take them,” project archivist Leah Rios told people
as they traded their posters for small fliers about how UTSA wants to document social and
political events and actions in San Antonio. UTSA started gathering protest signs from
recent marches and other materials such as buttons, signs, fliers and stickers in January.
“Every single march, we hit,” Rios said. “We think it’s going to be a busy year.”
Central Library’s Latino Collection is finally getting its
due<http://www.expressnews.com/news/news_columnists/elaine_ayala/artic...
by ELAINE AYALA - San Antonio Express-News | Pub: 03/06
Established in 1995, the Latino Collection was sequestered on the sixth floor of the
downtown library in what can only be described generously as an afterthought. “It was just
to appease us,” said Ellen Riojas Clark, a UTSA professor emerita, recalling a library
board that “was not supportive at all.” It even attempted to evade Latino activists by
switching the site of public meetings. She recalled a remarkable meeting when a teen
Marisa Bono, now Southwest regional counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and
Educational Fund, spoke before the board and advocated for the creation of a Latino
Collection. Its volumes were placed in a 2,000-square-foot area in a seldom-trafficked
spot on the sixth floor.
