Spring 2023 Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry Showcase
The UTSA Office of Undergraduate is proud to celebrate National Undergraduate Research
with an annual event sponsored by the (OUR) featuring students will showcase undergraduate
student research and creative endeavors from all disciplines across campus. The event is
meant to increase visibility of and participation in undergraduate scholarly endeavors
across all areas of academic inquiry. Such scholarly experiences enhance learning by
complementing classroom-based instruction, provide real-life, hands-on experience in
student’s field of interest, and offer development of critical and independent thinking,
creativity, and problem solving. This event will be live on campus, with multiple events
happening throughout the week.

Students may showcase their creative and scholarly work from: Fall '22, Spring
'22, Summer '22 and Spring '23.
Students may choose to present their work in the following ways:

4. 2- minute Research Video Showdown Competition

Upcoming Summer Opportunity at The Chung Lab at UT Southwestern (UTSW)
UTSW studies cancer biology and stem cells, with a focus on leukemia, other bone marrow
cancers, and hematopoietic stem cell biology. We are looking for highly motivated
individuals who are passionate about scientific and/or clinical research. In our lab we
leverage cutting-edge technology to study normal and malignant hematopoietic stem cell
biology, with extensive use of mouse models of bone marrow failure and leukemia, as well
as stem cell transplantation assays. Individuals who join the lab will have the
opportunity to interact and collaborate with the rich community of basic and translational
scientists at UTSW, as well as a team of medical oncologists specializing in hematologic

communicate with, trust, and support others, as well as handle conflicts and negative
interactions. These relationships are also studied through a variety of different social
and behavioral science disciplines, including psychology, human development, family
sciences, and interpersonal communication. Increasing interdisciplinary insights into how
close relationships and human social networks function and impact well-being across the
lifespan is important to consider in training the next generation of scholars.

NSF-DoD REU Site: Advanced Technologies for Hypersonic, Propulsive, Energetic, and
Reusable Platforms (HYPER) at the University of Central Florida (UCF).
HYPER addresses challenges in aerospace travel and energy production, advancing the
fundamental knowledge needed to overcome technical barriers limiting hypersonic flight.
The 10-week program will be held this summer from May 21st – July 29th, 2023. Participants
will gain hands-on research training in challenges such as: utilizing advanced
manufacturing techniques for high-value components, integrating in-site monitoring of
stress-strain evolution, developing novel methods for improved internal cooling and heat
transfer effectiveness, and mitigating flutter through advanced rotor dynamic control.
Many of these challenges rely on approaches that cut across disciplines and research
techniques.

The Stanford BAD Lab Summer Virtual

students pursuing research in Black language and culture in the language sciences. This
internship would support their pursuit of advanced research and graduate study in
linguistics and education. Interns will gain broad training in quantitative and
qualitative research skills, along with 1:1 mentorship catered to their individual
interests. Specifically, they will attend weekly seminars on fundamentals of research
ethics, qualitative inquiry, quantitative sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and
community-based participatory research. In addition, they will work closely with Dr.
Charity Hudley and a postdoctoral scholar or graduate student to develop an independent
research proposal. Postdoctoral and graduate mentors will be from linguistics and
education programs at Stanford University, UCLA, and UCSB. The program will culminate with
each intern presenting their work to an interdisciplinary audience.

How to Apply
To apply, please see the instructions below. All applications are due Friday, March 10,
2023 by 5pm PST.
1. Statement of Purpose (1 page, single-spaced, 12pt font)
This essay should state your short-term and long-term professional goals and explain why
you are applying for this opportunity to study Black language and culture in particular.
You should discuss how the experiences afforded by the BAD Lab Summer Internship program
align with your goals and how your academic background has prepared you to benefit from
the program. You should explicitly state your interest in and experience with the fields
of linguistics and education. We encourage you to visit our

to get an idea of current research interests and projects.
2. Personal Statement (1 page, single-spaced, 12pt font)
This is your chance to tell the committee about yourself as a person in ways that may not
be visible in your other materials: any challenges you’ve overcome in getting to or
getting through college, any achievements or accomplishments that you’re especially proud
of, anything in your personal background that prepares you for this opportunity. This
statement and the statement of purpose are equally important.
3. University Transcript.
An unofficial transcript is sufficient.
4. Résumé/Curriculum Vitae (submit either one, not both)
Résumé: This is a document of no more than two pages summarizing your education, work,
research, and/or volunteer experience relevant to the program.
CV: This is an extensive summary of your cumulative experiences. The CV should provide a
more detailed account of your education, work, research, and/or volunteer experience,
including any publications, public presentations, and/or other academic accomplishments.
It may be as long as you wish. Note: A résumé is easier to put together, but a CV gives
you more space to say whatever you want to say.
5. Two Faculty Letters of Recommendation.
You should request letters from any two college-level faculty members who can speak to
your academic and research potential, as well as the character traits that facilitate your
ability to succeed in a new environment. All letters should be sent directly from the
recommenders to Dr. Kahdeidra M. Martin at

Associate Dean Anne H. Charity Hudley, Stanford Graduate School of Education.
For fullest consideration, all application materials should be sent on or before the
