College food pantries offer
lifeline<http://www.expressnews.com/opinion/editorials/article/College...
by EXPRESS-NEWS EDITORIAL BOARD - San Antonio Express-News | Pub: 12/20
Food insecurity is a growing problem among college students trying to juggle rapidly
rising tuition rates, high-priced textbooks and rent on limited resources. Food insecurity
covers a wide spectrum of students and includes 25 percent of community college students
and 20 percent of those in four-year universities. Many of them are not what we would
consider traditional college students, those who enroll right out of high school and are
supported by Mom and Dad. Hunger was found to be more prevalent among students of color
and first-generation college students, according to “Hunger on Campus,” a recently
released study conducted by the National Student Campaign.

Sikh leader G.P. Singh, small business advocate Janie Barrera and the OCI Group, a
consulting firm with a focus on social responsibility, will be honored at the Institute of
Texan Cultures’ first-ever Texas Star Heritage Award Gala in January. The formal dinner,
silent auction and entertainment event, to be held Jan. 19 under the institute’s 26-screen
projection dome, is an official San Antonio tricentennial event and a “turning point, in a
sense, for the museum,” said James Benavides, senior communications specialist at the
institute, which is run by the University of Texas at San Antonio.
14 UTSA players make the walk at unique

UTSA president Ricardo Romo has been involved in more than 250 graduations during his
educational career. But the ceremony he administered late Friday afternoon in a gazebo at
Old Town in Albuquerque might have his most memorable one yet. Romo provided degrees for
14 UTSA players who will graduate in December. Because of their obligations in Saturday’s
New Mexico Bowl, they wouldn’t be able to walk the stage at the Alamodome with their
classmates. Romo flew to New Mexico to “hang out,” as he called it, on Friday before
graduation.
Students Who Get Better Career Guidance Remember College More

by MAYRA LINARES - NPR | Pub: 12/20
A new survey of 11,483 college graduates, for the Gallup-Purdue Index, found graduates who
reported "very helpful" campus career-services experiences were 5.8 times more
likely to say their university prepared them for life after college, 3.4 times more likely
to recommend their school and 2.6 times more likely to donate to their alma mater than
graduates who found their campus career help "not at all helpful."

Colin Ozeki, 17, doesn't like to sugarcoat how autism spectrum disorder has affected
his interactions with others, his emotions and his own self-confidence. He sees it as an
issue to confront, something about himself to work on and improve in order to fully
participate in life around him.
Great Books To Inspire English Language

I grew up speaking Spanish, and I didn't start learning English until I was in
preschool. When it came to books, I struggled — like many ELL students — to connect with
characters that didn't look like me or speak my language.
