Subject: QUICK TURNAROUND: FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FROM TSERI/CPS ENERGY
Dear Associate Deans for Research,
Please distribute to your faculty – Deadline May 30th!
CPS Energy is looking for new and innovative research relevant to the utility industry
that involves UTSA faculty and students. They are highly motivated in two ways:
* They want to hear from UTSA faculty about new ideas, and
* They want to work with us and our students – helping our students get to know CPS
Energy and to explore potential career opportunities. There is emphasis on MS students
and undergraduates, but PhD students may still be included.
Project period of performance will take place in two funding periods:
* Period 1- September 1, 2023 – August 31, 2024
* Period 2 – September 1, 2024 – August 31, 2025
Funding for the second period is contingent upon approval by CPS Energy based on
performance in the first funding period and the availability of budget allocation.

How to Apply (Phase I):
Provide a 1-page paper containing the following information:
* PI & Co-PI name(s) and contact information;
* Title of proposed project;
* 1 paragraph outlining the proposed project;
* Value proposition statement for CPS Energy;
* Summary budget for each of the funding periods (up to $250K for each)*;
* Students supported: must support multiple PhD/MS and UG students, include names of
potential students, if possible;
* Tenure-track and tenured faculty may participate as PI in ONE white paper submission
and as co-PI in ONE white paper submission for a total of two projects;
* Only tenure-track and tenured faculty are eligible to apply;
* A maximum effort of 2 person months per faculty member.
*We suggest you use the UTSA budget template (attached) to back up the summary budget in
your white paper; if your project is selected for funding, this budget will be used for
the next phase. Use UTSA F&A rate and do not delete the TSERI administrative support
amount shown in the salary section. The standard salary requirements for graduate students
at your college should be followed.

The white papers will be circulated to CPS Energy for review and down-select. Those
selected will be asked to provide more detailed information (via paper and/or
presentation). All selected projects will be routed through and administered by TSERI -
Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute in the Klesse College of Engineering and
Integrated Design. This means at the time of routing; your proposal needs to indicate
TSERI as the managing institute.
Selection Process (Phase II):
From the pool of white papers, a group of finalists will be selected by a CPSE organized
research committee (no UTSA representatives included). These finalists will be asked to
provide an in-depth presentation of their projects to CPSE committee members.
Based on the in-depth presentations, a funding decision will be made and submitted to the
CPSE executive level for final approval.
An announcement will be made revealing the funded projects and PIs.
