Application Deadline: Sep. 15th 2017 We are looking for a COEHD doctoral student to work with the African American Studies program housed in COEHD. This is a fully funded doctoral position that will provide salary and tuition and fees for academic year 2017-2018. The position involves both Research and Teaching opportunities. Eligibility 1) Applicants must be current Ph.D. or Ed.D. student in The College of Education and Human Development. MA students in COEHD programs are also welcome to apply. 2) Applicants are preferred to have experience of the study/research that centers on or is related to Africa and the African Diaspora. 3) Applicants must be continuously enrolled as a full – time graduate student for the term of the award. 4) Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or above. Duties 1. Recipient will be working as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Fall 2017 semester assisting with grant proposal writing for the African American Studies program. 2. Recipient will be working as a Teaching Assistant for African American Studies program teaching one course for the Spring 2018 semester for AAS program. 3. She and her husband, Matt, who live in San Antonio, founded David’s Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to cyberbullying victim advocacy. Maurine said they met with lawmakers, law enforcement officials, district attorneys, school administrators, school board presidents, mental health providers and school counselors. Their goal: legislation that might prevent future cyberbullying-related suicides in Texas. On June 9, Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 179, also known as "David’s Law." Bernal was a leader in bicultural studies<http://digital.olivesoftware.com/Olive/ODN/SanAntonioExpressNe... by MARY MILLS HEIDBRINK - San Antonio Express-News | Pub: 09/11 A pioneer in the field of bicultural and bilingual studies, Bernal “felt that everyone was carrying a treasure trove of information inside of them,” said his wife, poet Carmen Tafolla. “His whole interest was in seeing the potential a human being had.” An educator for almost 50 years, Bernal was once told by the principal of a small South Texas school that there were “no gifted kids in this school — they are all Mexican,” Tafolla said. He proved the principal wrong. Publishing “Gifted Mexican-American Children: An Ethno-Scientific Perspective” in 1974, Bernal “changed the face of education, of what it meant to be Latino,” Tafolla said. Bernal continued that work throughout his life. He died at 79 on Sept. 1 of complications of Parkinson’s disease. As a professor and researcher at the University of Texas at San Antonio, “he laid the foundation for bilingual education as we know it,” said longtime friend and colleague Roberto Milk.
