BBL receives Communities in Schools

The Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies received an award for Outstanding College
Partnership from Communities in Schools - San Antonio. The award recognized the ELL
Tutoring/Mentoring Program, which was a service learning project for the ESL 3023 and 3063
classes. Tatiary Ozuna, who tutored at Carrillo Elementary School in the South San Antonio
Independent School District, received the College Student Volunteer of the Year Award from
Communities in Schools - San Antonio. Pictured left to right are Ron Thomas, Dr. Lindahl,
Tatiary Ozuna, Dr. Flores, and Dr. Henderson.

Rachel Star Withers runs a YouTube channel where she performs goofy stunts on camera and
talks about her schizophrenia. Since 2008, when the then 22-year-old revealed her
diagnosis online, tens of thousands of people have seen her videos. Some of them have a
psychotic disorder or mood disorders themselves, or know people who do.

The Math and Science Awards program encourages high-achieving young women to continue
studying STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects and creates mentoring
opportunities with Sandia employees.Rachelle Hamblin shared her journey from Math and
Science awardee to college intern to technologist in the Systems Biology group. She
credited her exposure to the people and research at Sandia with inspiring her to pursue a
dual medical degree and master’s degree in public health at the University of Texas at San
Antonio.

of a group called Somos MAS, or 'We Are Mexican American Studies.' She says in a

tragic mass shooting that killed 49 people at a nightclub on June 12 in Orlando, Fla. The
