Dr. Patricia Sánchez, associate professor in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, was awarded $2,000 from DOCUmation for her academic achievements. Final Call for SECC Contrubutions

Hello Everyone,
This is the final week of the SECC campaign, and I'd like to urge everyone who hasn't already contributed to the campaign to do so. Each unit in the university has a very hard-working SECC champion who's tried to come up with creative ideas for involving people, such as pizza sales, silent auctions, and reminder emails, and they have done all they can to engage people in this effort. (if you haven't checked the SECC website, you'll see that the beautiful wreath that hangs on the door of the Dean's office is still up for bid in the silent auction-it's beautifully made, and worth a good price!)
It's a given that most, if not all of us, already donate to a number of other charities, which may or may not be part of the group of organizations included in the SECC campaign. All we have to do is look around us, and we know that our help is urgently needed by so many, particularly in our own community. I understand that some people do not participate in the SECC because they feel coerced, and as such, on principle, they do not give to the campaign. The bottom line, however, is that the organizations represented in the SECC provide services to humans and animals that are critical to their well-being and survival and it seems to me that their needs are more important than any philosophical position we might take on the matter.
We've all experienced budget cuts in the college, and the lack of merit pay hasn't helped the situation.......that said, relative to so many others, we are fortunate. The budget cuts to these service providers, however, have been substantial, and those in these agencies who remain doing the hard works are there out of a genuine sense of social justice and the importance of the work they are doing-not just in words, but in action....they and those whom they serve need our encouragement and support....

All- This is a reminder that The Office of Undergraduate Research has spring and summer 2015 scholarships for UG researchers. The long semester awards of $1000 (or $2000 for summer) also allows winners to pay in-state tuition for the awarded period. These opportunities are competitive and there will be 2-3 awards per college including Honors depending on number of applicants. Non-college research units are welcome to apply as well. Faculty vs administrators

Hello all,
I am confused about who is considered faculty and who is considered an administrator, especially in regards to who can vote in department promotions and tenure process. I had thought that voting faculty had to be teaching at least 1 class a semester to be considered voting faculty. Where does one go to find out which administrators are considered to be faculty and will be able to vote in the departments consideration of promotion and tenure.

Regent's Outstanding Teaching Awards 2015

Dear COEHD Faculty,
The U. T. System is seeking nominations for the 2015 Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards. Per Pedro Reyes, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, "The awards will recognize faculty who deliver the highest quality of undergraduate instruction, demonstrate their commitment to teaching, and have a history and promising future of sustained excellence with undergraduate teaching." Tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track award recipients will receive $25,000 each.
The University of Texas at San Antonio will submit the following nominees for consideration of the award: 8 tenured, 3 tenure-track, and 3 non-tenure-track/adjunct instructors for consideration for the awards. Therefore, each college will submit a maximum of the following numbers of nominees:

* Nominees must have at least three years teaching experience at the university level.
The nomination of strong candidates who may already have received teaching awards or teaching award nominations is encouraged.
Below you will find the COEHD timeline for the submission/review process. As you can see, the timeframe is very tight and the awards are quite large. Therefore, it is important that we adhere to the timeline.
The nomination process will be conducted in two phases:
Phase I:
1) Nomination packets should be submitted to Liliana Gutierrez (liliana.gutierrez(a)utsa.edu<mailto:liliana.gutierrez@utsa.edu>) in the COEHD-Office of the Dean no later than Monday, December 1, 2014.
All nomination packets must contain the following materials for Phase I review:
1. A completed application form (attached),
2. A CV that emphasizes teaching accomplishments (maximum: 15 pages) and
3. Information regarding how to compose a quality teaching philosophy statement can be found online at http://lib.utsa.edu/services/faculty/teaching-learning-services/teaching-... (click on Teaching Philosophy Development).
2) Each college will identify their nominees and email their names to Dr. Nancy Martin.
Phase II: The UTSA Award Selection Committee will determine the University's cohort of nominees. These 14 UTSA candidates will develop a full e-portfolio that will be submitted for consideration at the U.T. System level. To make all the candidates more competitive, Teaching and Learning Services in the Faculty Center will provide resources on teaching portfolios and teaching philosophy statements as well as opportunities for classroom observations and portfolio reviews.

The SECC campaign is now in it's third week! Have you made your pledge to SECC? There will be weekly drawings for UTSA football game tickets and other great prizes for anyone who donates early. Make your pledge early and have more chances to win!
The latest campaign report is in, and so far 38 out of 289 faculty and staff in the College of Education and Human Development have made a gift, for a participation rate of 13.1%Let's increase the momentum and strive for COEHD to reach 100% this year!
