The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Office of ESL Services welcomed more than 70 undergraduate Mexican students and 14 faculty members from three Mexican universities at a special Welcome Ceremony on Friday, July 18, 2014. The students, which came from the Universidad de Guadalajara, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, and Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, are participating in the Intensive English Summer Camp, which began on Wednesday, July 16, 2014.

Dr. Thelma Duffey, professor and department chair in the College of Education and Human Development’s Department of Counseling, was elected to serve as president of the American Counseling Association (ACA). Duffey will assume her role as the association’s 64th president on July 1, 2015.

Your faculty will be expected to attend only one of the Convocation ceremonies and the luncheon between the two ceremonies. You will be a member of the stage party for both of the Convocation ceremonies. We ask you and your faculty (in academic regalia) to march in the Convocation ceremony and to be table hosts at the luncheon to welcome the new students. The individual colleges will communicate with their faculty concerning their Intended Major Exploration sessions. I have asked that the faculty members complete the online response request to indicate their participation in the August 25 events.

The San Antonio Chapter of the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas (HWNT) recently hosted its 10th annual scholarship breakfast and honored scholarship award recipients including five young women from UTSA. This year, the HWNT awarded $22,500 in scholarships to 13 students who completed three Latinas in Progress program sessions, which offer personal and professional development.

Current Research
Dr. He's research expertise is in the fields of community nutrition and health promotion. Her current research program addresses the problems of obesity and its comorbidities using both behavioral and metabolic approaches. She identified behavioral risk factors for obesity in minorities including Hispanics that can be modified through school- and community-based interventions. There are several on-going sponsored research programs currently being carried out in her Laboratory of Human Nutrition at UTSA. These include: 1. "Building a Healthy Temple – A faith-based obesity prevention program for Latino children and parents, funded by the San Antonio Life Science Institute. (2010-2011); 2. "Building a Healthy Temple – A faith-based community participatory research project for preventing childhood obesity among Latino families, funded by RWJF, Salud America! Competition. (2009-2011); 3. "Soy as an Innovative Strategy to Prevent Central Obesity in Menopausal Women"funded by the United Soybean Association and the UTSA Collabrative Research Seed Grant Proram (2011-2012); 4. "Effect of resistance training in preventing yo-yo weight cycling in middle-age women" funded by the UT STARs Plus Fund.

I had A.J. Delgado in a grad statistics course. He never received his HS Diploma, dropping out at I think 9th grade (or so). He worked in various odd jobs and professions, ultimately earning his GED so that he could attend college. He attended community college, supporting himself and a small family by various jobs, and ultimately enrolled at UTSA for his undergraduate work (I think Psychology). He has excelled since entering community college, and just graduated from our Master's program in Health & Kinesiology. As a master's student he requested to take my doctoral-level more advanced statistics course in the spring and was clearly the best student in the class. He is now considering doctoral work. Since he is a graduate now, not sure if he fits the "profile" you are looking for, but he is a great story and succeeded in large part due to his connection to UTSA - coupled with a tremendous intellect and work ethic

Robab is a graduate student in ILT. She is originally from Iraq, who has moved to the US. She has a daughter who is also a student at UTSA and is trying to get a second daughter out of Iraq to join them. She has overcome many obstacles in order to get to the US and an education...abusive spouse, divorce (not looked upon favorably in Iraq), low expectation for women to work outside home and go to school, raising children in an abusive home and then as a single mom in a country that does not support single mothers.

Wesley is a graduate student in ILT and has an amazing story! He escaped from Iran when the Shah took over at the age of 17. Took him many years to get to US through refugee camp in Pakistan, onto Russia, Germany, England and then US. He has obtained US citizenship, and a BS from UTSA. I nominate Elizabeth Cook, a doctoral fellow in the ELPS department. What makes her "interesting" is that Liz is a first generation African American doctoral student with two children and a husband in the military. She juggles these multiple roles (full time graduate student, mother, wife/partner, research assistant, etc.) and has been a great student/community leader on our campus. Her research interests explore the experiences of African American students at Hispanic Serving Institutions, a project that Liz and I have been working on and has much potential for future work on our campus as we seek to become a Tier 1 institution.

I recommend the 5 students in Winter Garden Cohort 1 who have all completed their Doctor of Education degree through the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.
The Winter Garden Cohort program is an outreach initiative by the ELPS Department to offer the Ed.D.in K12 Educational Leadership in the Winter Garden Region of Texas. All courses were offered at Southwest Texas Junior College-Uvalde Campus. Courses were offered in both face to face and telepresence formats.
