MCEC Undergrad/Grad student workshop

!. Here is a revised course outline for the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) workshops Nov 7 & 8. The presenter's goal is "general awareness of the issues of military kids and methods to support those kids in whatever transition they may face". (This of course is simplified) The material is very specific and useful.
To begin registration, I need the names, titles, if they are working (teacher, counselor, etc.) and in which Dept. in the COEHD they are taking classes. This will hold their place for the workshop. We do need that ahead of time for the nametags and we need to know how many to expect so as to not go over the limit of 50. The presenter needs to know how many in order to bring books and materials, which are very nice books and materials.
The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) is doing the name tags so I will forward the names and titles to them when I have them all collected.
MCEC also has a "registration form" which they choose to have the students complete the day of the workshop. This is so MCEC has a paper record of their attendance for their files and will give them a certificate of attendance. I do not have that form. Julie Coffey, Presenter, will bring them along with the nametags.
You may ask your students to let you know and you send a consolidated list to me or you can ask them to contact me directly with their information and choice of days to attend. IF you are assigning this as a requirement for your course, you may want to send the names in a group. Remind them that lunch will be served at this student workshop.
2. I also need to know if you plan to attend the Faculty workshop, for the flyer previously sent (Oct 17 or 20th) and which date/location you will attend.

The Institute for Latino Studies (ILS) at the University of Notre Dame is pleased to announce our annual Virgilio Elizondo Distinguished Visiting Professorship named for our esteemed senior ILS colleague, the eminent theologian, Fr. Virgilio Elizondo<http://theology.nd.edu/people/faculty/virgilio-p-elizondo/>. Our visiting professor for this year is Dr. Davíd Carrasco<http://hds.harvard.edu/people/dav%C3%ADd-carrasco>, the Neil L. Rudenstine Professor of the Study of Latin America, Harvard Divinity School, joint appointment with the Department of Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University.
Professor Carrasco's activities on the Notre Dame campus will include a symposium for advanced doctoral students and pre-tenured professors. We seek applications from young scholars who are working on a dissertation, a book, or another research project related to the study of U.S. Latina and Latino populations. Successful nominees will attend Professor Carrasco's public lecture and participate in a symposium at which they will present a dissertation chapter or essay draft for discussion with Professor Carrasco and ILS faculty fellows. ILS will cover all expenses and offer an honorarium of $500 to each young scholar selected to participate in these events, which will take place April 9-10, 2015 at the University of Notre Dame.
Applicants are asked to submit a CV, one letter of recommendation, and a brief (2 pages or less) application letter that presents (a) a general summary of your dissertation project and/or overall research agenda, (b) a précis of your proposed chapter or essay submission for the symposium, (c) a statement of your progress to date on the overall project and on the proposed chapter or essay submission, and (d) a statement of how specifically Professor Carrasco's expertise and mentorship will enhance your research. We finally have dates and locations of the two Military Culture Workshop events.
One flyer gives the two dates and locations for the Faculty 2 hour, 15 minute workshop. One is at the Main Campus (Oct 17) and one at the Downtown Campus (Oct 20) for your convenience. You only need to attend one. Please Reply to this email if you plan to attend a Faculty workshop and which location.
For those of you who volunteered to assist on the panel for the Faculty workshop, please let me know if you are still available on those dates.
The other flyer is for the COEHD student workshop which is a full day of training by an outside organization, The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) which is the source for expertise on working with Military Children and Families in the Schools. This workshop is also presented twice to accommodate students at both campuses and on a Friday (Main Campus) Saturday, for Grad students who can best attend on a Saturday (Downtown Campus). So the students need only attend one of the two days, Nov 7 or 8th. Lunch will be served at the student workshop at both locations.
I will send Registration information for students at a later date.
(The descriptions for the two workshops may be altered as seen appropriate by the speakers.)

I'd like to strongly recommend the NSF Early Career Award Grant Writing Workshop that will be held this Tuesday, September 16, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. In the JPL Faculty Assembly Room. The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Alexis Lewis, NSF Program Director.

The University of Texas at San Antonio’s (UTSA) College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) recently acquired the ownership of the “Bilingual Review” from Arizona State University’s (ASU) Hispanic Research Center (HRC). The journal will be housed in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies (BBL) under the editorial direction of Dr. Howard Smith, associate professor.

This summer, in the midst of an escalating war, Dr. Rosalind Horowitz, professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, traveled to several cities in Israel to give lectures based on her research and to collaborate with researchers in the Negev, the southernmost part of Israel. Her trip abroad also served as an opportunity for her to meet face-to-face with children living in poverty and subject to the atrocities of war.

(TPR NEWS) -- State lawmakers are looking at possible legislation in 2015 that would increase the number of foster care youth enrolled in college using a free tuition waiver. In 2013, high school graduation rates for foster care children were less than 65% and many of them age-out of the college tuition waiver provided by the state of Texas.
