When VIDA Middle School in Vista, California, received a grant to hand every one of its 680 students an iPad with a free 4G connection, parents were excited. They were also a little nervous. At the beginning of the school year, Jessica Martinez, a fifth grade teacher at Sky Harbour Elementary School in the Southwest Independent School District, started the 1,000 Book Project. As part of the project, Martinez, who is also a graduate student in the College of Education and Human Development, had her students write letters to their families, members of the community, and organizations asking for book donations.

On May 15, the Institute of Texan Cultures opened a new exhibit on one of the major cultural groups of Texas. “Los Tejanos” is about the Spanish and Mexican influence on the Lone Star State. Through 500 years of history, the Tejano culture helped shape what Texas is today. To celebrate the new exhibit and give the entire community a chance to see the exhibit, the museum will sponsor a free Sunday, May 17, noon to 5 p.m. It’s a hands-on opportunity children and families can enjoy. Museum educators will lead preview tours of the exhibit and partner organizations will projects and crafts.

Krimbill receives 2015 Howard A. Britton Memorial Award

The Patient Institute of San Antonio
Elisabeth Krimbill, COEHD doctoral candidate and Stone Oak Elementary principal, received the 2015 Howard A. Britton Memorial Award from the Patient Institute of San Antonio for her work improving the experiences of pediatric patients. Krimbill co-authored a book with Dr. Kimberly Irwin entitled "We Can: A Teacher’s Guide to Medically Fragile Children in the Classroom" that was recently updated and re-issued for publication as a project of the Patient Institute. This book will be shared with school districts, campus leaders, and classroom teachers to increase awareness and sensitivity to the needs of these children and their families. Krimbill also worked on a transition curriculum for hospitals to support Juniors and Seniors (and their families) as they prepare to transition to college or the work force. The clinic approach includes support in educational planning, financial planning, counseling, medical support, family programs, and life skills specialists. The curriculum and program has been designed for implementation in hospitals and clinics.

A majority of the young people in schools where I have worked speak a different language at home than they do at school. In my work in Boston, New York City, and Baltimore, I have seen school policies respond to the bilingual abilities of young people as a strength, as a deficiency, or as something to be ignored.

ELPS Golf Tournament Canceled and Reschedule for 2016

Due to getting a late start on planning for the 2015 ELPS golf tournament and the low number of registrations this close to the June 19, 2015, tournament date, we have decided to cancel this year's tournament and start it back up, tentatively in June 2016. Internationally acclaimed writer Carmen Tafolla has been named the 2015 Texas State Poet Laureate by the 84th Texas Legislature. Tafolla, an associate professor of practice with the UTSA College of Education and Human Development’s (COEHD) Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, was officially invested as poet laureate at a special resolution ceremony for the induction of all Texas State Artists at the Texas State Capitol in Austin on May 7.

Nearly 200 graduate students from the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) will graduate from the university on Saturday, May 9. Twenty of these graduate students will receive their doctoral degree, marking the college’s largest graduating doctoral class.

Karla Broadus | Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching
Karla Broadus, senior lecturer in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, received the Ujima Faculty Award. The Award is given to a faculty member who embodies the principle of UJIMA: Collective Work and Responsibility; the third of seven principles of Kwanzaa. In addition, the recipient of the award is a role model and mentor for students and supports the African American and Black community on and off campus.

Marone receives Sawtelle Financial Teaching Innovation Grant

UTSA Faculty Center and the Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars
Vittorio Marone, assistant professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, received a $3,000 Sawtelle Financial Teaching Innovation Grant to support development and implementation of his project funded through a generous contribution from the Sawtelle Financial Group. Marone’s project Remix 4 Diversity!, transforms his IDS-3123 Culture, Literature, and Fine Arts class into a dynamic “remixing lab” that integrates individual and group projects, as well as in-class, outside-the-class, and online learning activities.

The UTSA Academy for Teacher Excellence (ATE) received a Community Partner Award from the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas for the establishing the Nepohualtzitzin Ethnomathematics Club at the Westside Girl Scouts Leadership Center. ATE received the award at the annual Volunteer Recognition Event on Saturday, April 18. Dr. Linda Prieto, assistant professor in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, and her undergraduate students have been working with the children in the Nepohualtzitzin Club at the Westside Girl Scouts Leadership Center since the beginning of the school year.

The Hazelwood Act is a program to give Texas veterans up to 150 hours of free in-state higher education. Since 2009, their dependents, such as their kids, are also allowed to take advantage of getting up to 150 hours free. Senate Bill 1735, that could change that.
