Our historic number of doctoral graduates on Saturday

Good morning, Dr. Romo and Dr. Frederick--
I've just received confirmation that the COEHD will be graduating 20 doctoral students on Saturday! This is an historic number-not only for our college, but for the university overall. Our faculty has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the success of these doctoral students, and I am very appreciative of their efforts to provide both graduates and undergraduate with exemplary
educational experiences.
We are aware that college graduation is a huge milestone in people's lives, and understandably significant for graduates and their families. Consequently, I am pleased to say that 90 faculty members from the COEHD will be participating in Saturday's commencement ceremony.
We are very excited about our success and proud of our contribution to the university's efforts to achieve Tier One status

It's official! Our own Dr. Carmen Tafolla is the 2015 Texas State Poet Laureate! Congratulations to Carmen!
This award is certainly well-deserved, and, Carmen, you bring great honor to your colleagues and students in the COEHD, as well as to the entire university.

The San Antonio Writing Project will host a San Antonio Missions Camp Writing Marathon at the Missions Branch Library (3134 Roosevelt Ave.) and Mission San Jose at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2. The event is open to the public.

Meet Angelica Tello. As a first-generation college student from an underprivileged family, Tello faced obstacles throughout her academic career. But she overcame them to earn a doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision. Now she is eager to help students who face similar challenges.

Karla Broadus | Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching
Karla Broadus, senior lecturer in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, received the Ujima Faculty Award. The Award is given to a faculty member who embodies the principle of UJIMA: Collective Work and Responsibility; the third of seven principles of Kwanzaa. In addition, the recipient of the award is a role model and mentor for students and supports the African American and Black community on and off campus.

UTSA employees have received phone calls on both work and personal phone numbers from individuals claiming to be Microsoft support representatives. The caller states that they are aware of a problem with the UTSA employee’s computer and need information about the machine, including the IP address, in order to provide technical support. Outside support vendors working with UTSA do not contact faculty or staff members directly. If you receive a call asking for information about your computer and have any doubts whatsoever, do not provide any details to the caller. But there are exceptions--every once in a while, something happens and we immediately learn to associate that stimulus with a result. Scientists have discovered that uncertainty in terms of the causal relationship -- whether an outcome is actually caused by a particular stimulus -- is the main factor in determining whether or not rapid learning occurs.

On the first day of school, perhaps the only person more discussed than the "new kid" is the "new kid who skipped a grade." Words like "gifted," "brilliant" and "genius" get thrown around to describe these students. Education researchers generally refer to them as "accelerated." It's a catch-all term to describe students who have either entered kindergarten early, grade-skipped or taken single subjects above grade level.
