MLK Lecture series

Dear colleagues,
The African American Studies Program worked with the various offices on our campus organizing participants for San Antonio's 30th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. March on January 16, 2017. The six buses we helped sponsor, enabled hundreds of students to participate and engage with the meaning of MLK Day. Our bright orange shirts really helped us stand out. We were so proud to be Roadrunners!
Today, the African American Studies program is proudly inviting you to the MLK Lecture series and reception sponsored by the Office of the President. This year, our Martin Luther King Jr Speaker is Renee Watson, manager of the Bexar County Small, Minority and Women Owned business Enterprise (SMWBE Program). She is also a UTSA Alumnae.
Ms. Watson's presentation will center on "Getting Involved, Getting Engaged, and Getting an Education" which is fitting for this year's topic, A Roadrunner's Journey to Community Service.
We are looking forward to your participation in this event and ask that you note the date and time in your calendars. A reception will follow for all attendees.

The 2018 volume of Review of Research in Education (RRE), "The Challenges and Possibilities of Intersectionality in Education," will publish reviews that further the understanding of how intersectionality has been taken up in education research. Originally rooted in Black feminist epistemology and critical race theory, intersectionality is an analytical concept, an orientation, and a methodological approach aimed at understanding and addressing relationships of power and inequality within social spaces. Researchers working within an intersectional framework try to account for the dynamic and complex ways that race/ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, citizenship, ability, and age, among other things, shape individual identities and social life.

The 2018 editors (Jeanne M. Powers, Gustavo E. Fischman, and Adai A. Tefera) seek research syntheses that address three key areas:
* How have intersectional approaches produced new knowledge about education?
* What are the theoretical and methodological implications of the concept of intersectionality within the field of education?
* How have scholars, practitioners, and activists used intersectional approaches to address complex educational and social problems and promote interventions that foster equity and social justice?
Manuscripts for the 2018 volume of RRE are invited from across the many subfields and overlapping arenas of inquiry that constitute education research and from adjacent disciplines and fields where there is relevant research and expertise.
Each volume of RRE provides an overview and descriptive analysis of a selected topic of relevant research literature through critical and synthesizing essays. RRE promotes discussion and controversy about research problems in addition to pulling together and summarizing work in the field.

I hope that the Spring 2017 semester has gotten off to a good start! As you may remember, when Blanche Perrotta retired a decision was made to reallocate her Associate Dean of Teacher Education duties to Janis Harmon and Janet Scott. Both Janis and Janet have done an incredible job with these added responsibilities. Upon my review of the COEHD organizational structure and our needs, as well as the requirements of state agencies related to school professional preparation, and the great focus on Undergraduate Student Success (Janis’ original responsibility as Associate Dean) I have decided that this needs to be a dedicated position in order to ensure continued growth and excellence of our school professional education programs. Based upon my review of both the COEHD and State requirements (from a number of agencies such as System, TEA, SBEC, etc.), community considerations, and national needs and trends I have also expanded the scope of this position beyond teacher preparation: Associate Dean of School Professional Preparation, Assessment, and Accreditation. The expanded title, including the term School Professional preparation will include all those we prepare, teachers and beyond, at the initial and advanced levels.
The selected candidate selected will work closely with Janis Harmon, the Office of Teacher Education Services, System and State partners, and community stakeholders including working across colleges on curriculum alignment and partnerships. Responsibilities will include representing UTSA at statewide meetings related to educator preparation, overseeing the collection and analysis of required and needed data, working with program coordinators on issues related to alignment to disciplinary, state, and national standards, curriculum, assessment measures, improvement, and related programmatic issues, as well as with accreditors (state and where appropriate, national).
If you are interested in being considered for this position (three year appointment, renewable if mutually agreed upon) , please submit your vitae and a letter outlining your vision for the position, your leadership experience, a discussion of the state of professional preparation at UTSA and how we are positioned state-wide and nationally, and importantly , the role that a COEHD plays within an emerging R1 institution vis a vis school professional preparation, and the greatest needs as we move forward.

March Partnership meeting

Dear Colleagues,
As a result of the many meetings that I had with faculty and staff, I will be hosting a 'Partnership and Networking" meeting on March 8 from 2-4 PM, Ash- UC 2.03.06. If you have a partnership or partnerships you would like to share, and hear about other's activities, or want to hear about the interesting things people across the college are engaged in and then have the opportunity to network, I hope you are able to attend the meeting.
Please prepare a PPT slide with the following information:

Nature of the partnership (3-5 sentence description)
Support sources (if any- grant, etc.)
Opportunities for others to become involved
We will limit the descriptions to about 3 minutes each (very brief, I know), and then there will be light refreshments and the opportunity mingle and meet others involved in similar activities, learn more about other partnerships and lay the groundwork for enhanced collaboration across programs.
Please have the PPT slide emailed to JoAnn Jones and Byron Spencer by February 24, and they will compile the full PPT and develop a TOC so you know when you are **up**.
