I would like to invite all interested faculty, administration, staff, and students to two opportunities to hear from Ms. Vanessa Sansone, candidate for Assistant Professor in our Higher Education program in the ELPS Department. Ms. Sansone is currently a graduate student in the ELPS Higher Education doctoral program.
Here are the times for those meetings:
· Thursday, January 26, 2:15 - 3:30 pm, Downtown Campus, Buena Vista Building, 4.301B: Ms. Sansone will be providing a presentation describing her background, interests in UTSA and our program, and her research.
· Thursday, January 26, 3:45 - 4:30 pm, Downtown Campus, Buena Vista Building, 4.301B: This will be an informal meeting where Ms.Sansone will be able to answer questions and interact with graduate students as well as any faculty, staff, or administrators who wish to attend.

State of School Professional Preparation in the UTSA COEHD

Dear Colleagues,
Please join us for the State of School Professional Preparation at UTSA on Wednesday, February 15th at 9am- 12pm Travis Room HUC 2.202. We will be sharing data on our professional preparation programs and looking at the COEHD as a whole and individual programs. Our goals will be to share information (and do this regularly) and engage in a broader, collaborative discussion surrounding professional preparation in our college. Who should attend? If you are a faculty member who works with any students seeking professional licensure at any level (initial or advanced), if you are a program coordinator, or if you are a faculty lead on a course. This will begin the process of data sharing, analyzing our data, acting in a data informed way, and having a regular venue for program discussion, improvement, development, etc. I look forward to seeing you at this meeting.

On Saturday, Jan 28, from 9-11 am, the next of our series of Military Life Talks is taking place at the UTSA DTC, in the Riklin Auditorium (FS 1.406). The topic of the event is MILITARY FAMILIES COPING WITH POST-DEPLOYMENT STRESS, and the panel members will provide insights from a number of different view points. As always, the initial panel presentations will be followed by open discussion with the audience.

Amanda Swearingen Mary Finocchiaro Award for excellence in unpublished pedagogical material design Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) International
Amanda Swearingen, MA-TESL graduate student in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, is this year's recipient of the TESOL International Mary Finocchiaro Award for excellence in unpublished pedagogical material design. Amanda submitted the project she developed during summer 2016 in a UTSA graduate course (ESL 5083 Program and Syllabus Design), and will be honored at TESOL 2017 in Seattle.

Kristen Lindahl Teacher Education Interest Section Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) International
Dr. Kristen Lindahl, assistant professor in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, was recently elected to chair the Teacher Education Interest Section for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) International. TESOL and its related affiliates encompass 161 countries and include about 44,000 members; Teacher Education is the largest interest section in the association.

The Civic Engagement Summit<applewebdata://B1EB8BD2-E15D-4626-AD77-E6A8BC5FB203/bit.ly/CCEsummit> on February 9th, 2016 is just around the corner and we are in need of community projects, research or programs that students, faculty or staff want to showcase during our poster session this year. The poster session will happen from 3:30-5:00 PM at the HEB UC Center Ballroom. We will have an ice cream social as well as awards for the crowd favorite and judge favorite posters.
Last year we had 40 submissions, this year we want to get to that goal or even more! The deadline is now January 19, 2017.

Academy for Teacher Excellence NCLR Líderes Avanzando
The Academy for Teacher Excellence (ATE) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is partnering with the National Council of La Raza to offer the Líderes Avanzando program to UTSA and Alamo College students. Thirty college students will participate in bi-monthly, interactive workshops during the spring 2017 semester to help participants be successful in college. Topics will include building relationships, studying and time management, self-care, and financial aid. The program is targeted to Latina/o and first generation college students, though non-Latina/o and non-first generation college students are welcome to participate. Participants who complete all requirements will receive a $400 stipend.

Ramiro Nava 2017 Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship Texas Association of School Administrators
Ramiro Nava, doctoral student in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, is one of four people to receive the Texas Association of School Administrators' 2017 Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship. He, along with the other three recipients, will be honored at the TASA midwinter conference at the end of the month.

We conducted an internal search (open to the campus community ) to fill her Assistant Dean position (not an easy task!), and while we had a number of qualified candidates, there was unanimous agreement among the members of the search committee in the ultimate selection. Please join me in congratulating Liliana Gutierrez, who you all know, in her new position as Assistant Dean. Liliana has been a constant and knowledgable resource and has excelled in her current role as Administrative Services Officer III, and we look forward to her work with me and the Dean's office and the COEHD and University in this new role.
We will be advertising to fill the Administrative Services Officer position that Liliana has held, and Karen will be working with me and the Dean's Office staff on a smooth transition during her remaining time with us.
I look forward to our continued growth and collaboration across units within the COEHD, and our outward reaching work as well.
Enjoy the Martin Luther King weekend.

COEHD Dean's Office Staff Update
