October is SECC Month - Campaign & Kickoff Information

Dear COEHD Faculty and Staff,
It's that time of year again and UTSA is getting ready to kick off our 2018 State Employee Charitable Campaign! The SECC is a charitable giving campaign for state employees. This year's campaign will run Oct. 1-Nov. 2. You can donate<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww1.utsa...> online to the charities or causes you choose. One hundred percent of the proceeds collected during the campaign will benefit the charitable organizations listed in the SECC 2018 Directory of Charities. They include independent charities and those operating within the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County - you can give to the charities of your choice! All employees who make a donation will be entered into special prize drawings each week throughout the campaign.
We will kick off the 2018 State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC)<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww1.utsa...> with Agency Fairs on Oct. 2-3 at the Downtown, ITC and 1604 campuses. The free event will give attendees a chance to learn about several charitable organizations that benefit from campaign donations. Faculty and staff attending the events will receive a free $5 voucher to use at a Starbucks location on a UTSA campus, while they last...so come early! Bring your UTSA ID to receive the voucher.
The kickoff events are:
* Tuesday, Oct. 2, 9 a.m., Institute of Texan Cultures, Auditorium (1.01.08)
* Tuesday, Oct. 2, 3 - 4:30 p.m., Downtown Campus, Buena Vista Building Assembly Room (1.338)
* Wednesday, Oct. 3, 9 - 10:30 a.m., Main Campus Sombrilla Plaza (rain location: HSU Ballroom)

Faculty, staff, students and community members are welcome to bid on the auction items, including many unique items offered by our colleagues.
New this year is the San Antonio SECC Showdown, where we are challenging UT Health San Antonio to determine which school's employees give the most on a designated day. UTSA's day is Thursday, October 4. This is a great way to help our South Texas neighbors and help UTSA beat our Medical Center colleagues!
Over the past 19 years, millions of dollars have been donated through the SECC. Last year, UTSA employees donated more than $140,000 during the campaign.

The College of Education and Human Development (in collaboration with UTSA’s University College and College of Engineering) is seeking 2-3 graduate students to work on a new 4-year research and development project funded by the National Science Foundation titled“Transforming STEM Undergraduate Education through Academic Literacy, Mentoring and Professional Development”. The project builds on UTSA's and the NSF's dedication to increasing diversity in the STEM workforce by increasing the number of undergraduate underrepresented minorities who graduate from the UTSA Colleges of Engineering and Sciences. Graduate assistants will support the development, implementation, and analysis of STEM lessons that focus on academic literacy practices. The overall goal is to promote curricular change that focuses on the intersection of academic literacy and content competencies to improve student learning and success.

Candidates should email a brief letter of interest indicating their background and experience, and a resume to directly to Dr. Solís at <Jorge.Solis(a)utsa.edu> and Dr. Langman at <Juliet.Langman(a)utsa.edu.> The review of applications will begin October 2, 2018, and will continue until the positions are filled. The UT System Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards recognize faculty who deliver the highest quality of undergraduate instruction, demonstrate their commitment to teaching, and have a history and promising future of sustained excellence with undergraduate teaching. The number of nominees UTSA may submit varies each year.
Award: $25,000
2 T, 1 TT, 1 NTT nominees per college; full-time T, TT and NTT faculty eligible
All nomination packets must contain the following materials for Phase I review:
1. A completed application form (6 pages maximum)
2. A CV that emphasizes teaching accomplishments (maximum: 15 pages)
3. Written statement delineating their philosophy of teaching (maximum: 3 pages, 12 pt. font).
Richard S. Howe Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award

The Howe Teaching Award recognizes 2 faculty members per year who excel in developing signature learning experiences for undergraduate students. This could include creative applied or experiential learning beyond the traditional classroom environment.
Award: $2,000
Number of nominees varies per college; full-time T, TT and NTT faculty with at least 3 years at UTSA eligible
Nominees must be full-time faculty members with at least three years at UTSA and may be either tenured/tenure-track or non-tenure-track faculty. Recipients of the Howe Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award are eligible for re-nomination after a five-year period.

Innovations, both in the areas of learning and research, are central to UTSA's vision of becoming a model for student success, a great research university, and an exemplar for strategic growth and excellence. To foster and celebrate innovative thinking at UTSA, the President's I2 Award will recognize creative and innovative projects of high impact that emerge from our institution. One award will be given to a faculty-led team of up to five individuals working in all areas relevant to the mission of UTSA.
Team Award: $1,000 per UTSA employee/student (up to $5,000 per team)
Number of nominees varies per college; Teams must be led by a T, TT or NTT faculty member; however other team members may be non-faculty (graduate students, staff, postdocs and/or external collaborators).

2. Recent letter of support from a faculty member or department chair clearly addressing why the team is deserving of this award. Please note the relevant discipline(s) or activities and any demonstrated benefits or potential benefits to UTSA students, businesses, the public, or others.
3. Self-statement prepared by the team lead describing the work, including both the project's development and implementation. Be sure to clearly articulate why the work is both innovative and impactful. For the purposes of this award, projects that are farther along in their implementation and that have shown evidence of impact will be at an advantage.
4. OPTIONAL: Nomination packets may include up to two of the following as additional evidence of impact: a letter of support from a group that can speak to the impacts; data on the impacts; a media article; or evidence of student involvement (e.g. student stories), if applicable.
President's Distinguished Diversity Award

Description: Dr. Karen Potvin Klein will be available for one-on-one project consultations during her visit to UTSA Oct. 3 & 4. Dr. Klein is a grant development and medical editing professional with many years of experience as a researcher and grant writer. She specializes in NIH “K” (career) and “T” (training) programs, but has a broad knowledge of funders and programs. Individual PI projects will be scheduled for 30 minutes each. Team projects will be scheduled for 1 hour each.

Description: While often solicited through very brief notices for concise proposals, pursuing corporate and foundation grant opportunities can be a mystery. Private funding opportunities differ in significant ways from those offered through traditional public agencies. This session will provide guidance on who to work with when pursuing private funding at UTSA as well as some key insights into strategic planning and positioning to improve your competitiveness.

Description: This session will focus on pursuing funding from the Department of Education as well as on pursuing funding for STEM education research from NSF. Other funders of education research, including the Spencer Foundation, will also be discussed. We will talk about types of grants, the roles of program officers and how to approach them, how proposals are reviewed, and what reviewers are looking for.

In addition, we are part of a team that is coordinating the Leadership Takeover conference in February. The one-day conference is scheduled for Saturday, February 9, 2019.
Program proposals are now being accepted. We encourage students of all levels, faculty, and staff to submit proposals. Here is some additional information.
Each year Student Life hosts a 1 day leadership conference in the spring known as Leadership Takeover. This conference represents a collaborative effort on the part of all the departments in Student Life. We are currently looking for presenters for the conference and invite all who are interested to join us. If you know of any students, faculty, or staff that are interested in presenting please feel free to forward them this email. Below you will find a link to the presentation application. We are also hosting workshops on campus to support interested students, faculty or staff in developing and submitting a successful presentation proposal.
