Master's students in the Coordinated Program in Dietetics recently attended the International Symposium on Diabetes & Cardio Metabolic Disease, which featured the work of Dr. Ralph DeFronzo (pictured center), a world renowned diabetes researcher and physician. The students participated in multiple comprehensive sessions that included the Pathophysiology of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Cardiovascular Outcome Trials and Diabetes, and Insulin Therapy & T2DM. Graduate assistant research positions available<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/graduate_assistant...>
The College of Education and Human Development (in collaboration with UTSA’s University College and College of Engineering) is seeking 2-3 graduate students to work on a new 4-year research and development project funded by the National Science Foundation titled“Transforming STEM Undergraduate Education through Academic Literacy, Mentoring and Professional Development”. The project builds on UTSA's and the NSF's dedication to increasing diversity in the STEM workforce by increasing the number of undergraduate underrepresented minorities who graduate from the UTSA Colleges of Engineering and Sciences. Graduate assistants will support the development, implementation, and analysis of STEM lessons that focus on academic literacy practices. The overall goal is to promote curricular change that focuses on the intersection of academic literacy and content competencies to improve student learning and success.

Candidates should email a brief letter of interest indicating their background and experience, and a resume to directly to Dr. Solís at <Jorge.Solis(a)utsa.edu> and Dr. Langman at <Juliet.Langman(a)utsa.edu.> The review of applications will begin October 2, 2018, and will continue until the positions are filled. Senate Adopts Menendez Resolution Honoring Hispanic-Serving Institutions
WASHINGTON, D.C. – As our nation begins its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) introduced a Senate resolution recognizing the work, goals, and achievements of over 490 non-profit Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) throughout our nation by designating the week of September 17-23 as "National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week." S.Res.639 recognizes the achievements and goals of the 492 Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) in the United States, was adopted unanimously by the full Senate on September 18, 2018.
"Having the first-hand experience of studying in a New Jersey Hispanic-Serving Institution, it fills me with pride to reintroduce this resolution to continue recognizing the critical work these institutions do for our nation’s diverse student bodies and for the Latino community in general," said Sen. Menendez. "The Hispanic community depends on education to move up the social ladder, therefore, the future economic success of this country depends on a well-educated Hispanic workforce. In a time when Latinos and immigrants are targeted by the Trump Administration, our youth needs to keep attaining the tools they need to lead this nation to a brighter future."
"The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) applauds Senator Menendez’s leadership on the Senate Resolution designating September 17 - 23, 2018 as National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week. We also commend all the Senators who co-sponsored the resolution and supported its adoption," said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. "The 492 HSIs in the United States and Puerto Rico not only enroll 65% of all Hispanics, they also enroll 21% of all African Americans, 39% of all Asian Americans and 18% of all Native Americans, making them the most diverse cohort of higher education institutions, and a true reflection of the diversity of our nation."
Defined as degree-granting institutions where total Hispanic enrollment constitutes of no less than 25% of the total enrollment, HSIs play a critical role in educating Hispanic youth and improving the communities in which they are located. HSIs are located in 21 states and Puerto Rico with emerging Hispanic-Serving Institutions located in 33 States and the District of Columbia. New Jersey is home to 16 HSI’s.
Joining Sen. Menendez in cosponsoring this resolution were Senators: John Cornyn (R-Texas), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Dean Heller (R-Nev.), Patty Murray (D- Wash.), Bill Nelson (D- Fla.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.).

Dear Colleagues,
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Michael Karcher, Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, to his new role within the COHED as Associate Dean for Research. Dr. Karcher assumed responsibilities as of Monday, September 17, 2018 and will work with me, the faculty, and the Vice President for Research to continue to build the research infrastructure within the college and increase our portfolio in the area of external funding and research expendatures. Additionally, Dr. Karcher will work closely with Dr. Monica Treviño and Raitza Garcia to create a strong research and development team and identify opportunities, facilitate faculty collaboration, and build capacity in the area of external funding. As you know, achieving R1 and NRUF status is central to the mission of the university, and is a way to enhance student success, which is our number one goal. Dr. Karcher has a strong history of success in research and external funding, and will be an important member of the COEHD leadership team.
I look forward to your continued engagement, excellent work, and collegiality as we begin the 2018-2019 academic year with Dr. Karcher in this new roll.

Dear Faculty,
It's that time of year to think about your undergraduate students who may be interested in graduate school at UTSA beginning in Spring 2019. The VIP process is designed to facilitate the graduate application process for undergraduates who meet the criteria (see link below for criteria): involves two steps:
1. a tenure/tenure track faculty member nominates a student to VIP admissions (please click submit on the online form and then give a hard copy of the form to your Student Development Specialist to route for signature).
2. Once the Graduate School contacts the student, the student applies.
The process is now streamlined with the online nomination. For spring 2019 admission the deadline to nominate is October 1. Students will then have until October 15 to apply through the VIP system.
In the coming months, we will begin a coordinated recruitment effort that includes a focus on VIP.

New COEHD Associate Dean for Faculty Development

Dear Colleagues,
Please see the email below from the Provost and join me in welcoming Dr. Oliva to her new role in COEHD, which will begin in January.
As Associate Dean for Faculty Development, Dr. Oliva will work on a number of initiatives and policy issues, further strengthening COEHD's commitment to faculty affairs and development. We will be focusing this Fall on the types of initiatives that will populate her portfolio for the Spring, addressing areas of need surrounding the recruitment and retention of faculty, faculty mentorship, diversity initiatives, P&T process, faculty development, policies related to faculty affairs, and workload, to name a few.
We are lucky to have Dr. Oliva serve in this exciting role and her experience with academic and faculty support will be complementary to the leadership team and efforts within COEHD. I look forward to her work as we move forward.

Dear Colleagues,
As part of our efforts to streamline administrative processes and provide more cohesive and consistent support for our faculty and departments, the university's academic and faculty support functions are being re-integrated into Academic Affairs. As such, the following staff members are relocating to the fourth floor Main Building suite this month: Jenny De Los Santos, Eileen Egan, KC Gonzalez, Kevin McCollom, Andrea Trease, and Jacques Watkins. In addition to improving communications and processes by co-locating Academic Affairs staff, this move also allows us to reassign valuable space downtown to academic purposes in alignment with President Eighmy's re-envisioning of the Downtown Campus to offer students a comprehensive living and learning experience.
To minimize disruption until his planned retirement next summer, Dr. Jesse T. Zapata, senior vice provost, will continue to office on the fourth floor of the Frio Street Building, supported by senior administrative associate Melissa Ozuna. Dr. Maricela Oliva, who holds a part-time position as associate vice provost for academic and faculty support, will take on a new role as Associate Dean for Faculty Development in the College of Education and Human Development effective January 1, 2019.
Beginning today, all mail related to the academic and faculty support functions (faculty supplements, etc.) should be sent to the Office of the Provost at the Main Campus.

South San Antonio Independent School District’s board voted unanimously Tuesday to name Palacios ISD Superintendent Alexandro Flores the lone finalist to lead the district. The board voted 6-0 to name him the lone finalist. Trustee Elda Flores was absent. By law, the board must wait 21 days before voting to hire Flores as superintendent. Flores, who grew up in Eagle Pass, said the decision “feels like coming home.” He graduated from University of Texas at San Antonio and was previously an administrator at Natalia ISD and a teacher and principal in San Antonio ISD.

AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research

Deadline: November 1, 2018
The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is pleased to announce the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research. The Council of the AERA established the fellowship program to provide support for doctoral dissertation research, to advance education research by outstanding minority graduate students, and to improve the quality and diversity of university faculties. This fellowship is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders). This program offers doctoral fellowships to enhance the competitiveness of outstanding minority scholars for academic appointments at major research universities. It supports fellows conducting education research and provides mentoring and guidance toward the completion of their doctoral studies.
Award
Each fellowship award is for 1 year, beginning July 1, 2019 or later, and is nonrenewable. This fellowship program is intended as a write-up fellowship. Fellowships are awarded for doctoral dissertation research conducted under faculty sponsorship in any accredited university in the United States. The AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research provides funding for up to $19,000 for a 1-year project and $1,000 reimbursement to attend the AERA Annual Meeting. Fellows are required to participate in a mentoring and career development workshop and present their research in an invited poster session during the 2020 AERA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA.
Eligibility
Eligible graduate students for the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research will be at the writing stage of their dissertation by the beginning of the fellowship. The dissertation study should focus on an education research topic such as high stakes testing; ethnic studies/curriculum; tracking; STEM development; measurement of achievement and opportunity gaps; English language learners; or bullying and restorative justice. Applicants can come from graduate programs and departments in education research, the humanities, or social or behavioral science disciplinary or interdisciplinary fields, such as economics, political science, psychology, or sociology.
Fellows are required to provide proof of advancement to candidacy at the beginning of the award period. Applicants must work full-time on their dissertations and course requirements and should be in the writing stage of their dissertation. This program is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders).
