COEHD Spring 21 Strategic Faculty Research Mentoring Grant Proposal Award Competition
by Michael Karcher
Dear Colleagues,
Attached is the FRP for a COEHD incentive award competition for Spring and Summer 2021. The RFP describes Strategic Faculty Research Mentoring Grant Proposal Award Competition that invites letters of intent describing how pairs/teams of cross-rank (and cross-college) faculty will partner to submit external research proposals in two strategic areas and will involve cross-rang faculty mentoring in proposal development and submission.
Please let me, Emily or Iwan know if you have any questions.
And let me wish you a restful break, joyful holidays and a happy new year.

Strategic Faculty Research Mentoring Grant Proposal Award Competition—Focus on
(1) Social Justice, Diversity, and Inclusion and (2) Strategic Research Partnerships
Distributed 12/16/20
Introduction
The College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) is pleased to sponsor the Strategic Faculty Research Mentoring (SFRM) grant proposal award competition. The goal is to encourage cross-rank and cross-college collaborations that lead to long-term research partnerships and that support the grant-writing skills of junior faculty through their collaborative development and submission of a large-scale research grant proposal. Faculty mentoring is key to successful professional development, and strategic partnership are increasingly viewed as necessary to foster impactful scholarship. The SFRM grant proposal award competition incentive encourages the formation of these faculty-to-faculty mentoring collaborative efforts by awarding least four grant development teams, each consisting of two to four UTSA faculty, including one or two (1-2) senior faculty member(s), preferably with a track record of extramural funding, and either one or two (1-2) COEHD tenure-track junior faculty member(s), to collaborate in developing and submitting a proposal for funded research addressing either of two strategic areas. At least two of the grants will be awarded to teams with letters of intent to submit proposals for external funding for research addressing Social Justice, Diversity, and Inclusion. At least two awards will be made to teams submitting letters of intent to submit research proposals with a focus on establishing Strategic Research-Practice Partnerships. Awarded letters of intent that are selected for eligibility will receive a $3,000 stipend once they have submitted their proposal to the funder as planned. The actual proposals must be submitted during one of the two proposal development periods: one for proposals submitted from 2/15/21 to 6/15/21 (the 1st call) and a second for proposals submitted between 4/15/21 and 8/15/21 (the 2nd call).
The Office of the Dean will provide each of the cross-rank pairs or teams of faculty with a total stipend ($3,000) to be divided among the two to four participating faculty on each proposal. The awarded funds are not to be used for the proposed study, but rather their own independent research-related activities. Letters of intent will be reviewed by the COEHD Research & Development Committee. There will be two submission deadlines, so that funding opportunities in Spring and Summer can be pursued. Faculty may only propose one time in FY21, so must select either the first or second submission period.

Subject: FY 2021 Seed Grant Program Announcement
Good Afternoon All,
Please see below seed grant opportunities offered under the Office of the Vice President for Research, Economic Development, and Knowledge Enterprise (VPREDKE) that can be distributed within your respective college. Please note - COE and COS faculty are ineligible for the INTRA program..
The Grant for Research Advancement and Transformation (GREAT) program will provide seed grants to support new areas of research for faculty at UTSA. The primary goal of these awards will be to assemble preliminary data that can be used to seek extramural funding and advance UTSA’s institutional research excellence goals (Carnegie R1, NRUF, AAU, etc.). It is expected that up to four grants for a maximum of $20,000 each may be awarded.
NOI Deadline: February 15, 2021 and Proposal Deadline: March 3, 2021
The Transdisciplinary Teams (T2) program will provide seed grants to support UTSA faculty members to engage in scholarly research activities that foster transdisciplinary collaborations. The primary goal of these awards is to assemble teams of researchers from different disciplines that will establish a foundation to seek extramural funding, ultimately advancing UTSA’s research excellence goals (Carnegie R1, NRUF, AAU, etc.).It is anticipated that five grants of $20,000 each may be awarded.
NOI Deadline: March 1, 2021 and Proposal Deadline: March 17, 2021
The Internal Research Awards (INTRA) program is part of The UTSA VPREDKE coordinated efforts to promote research and scholarship of the highest quality. This program offers experience in identifying and submitting applications to potential funding sources, provides preliminary data to support applications for extramural funding, and enhances scholarly and creative activities. It is anticipated that twenty grants of $5,000 each may be awarded.
Proposal Deadline: March 31, 2021
The Connecting through Research Partnerships (Connect) program sponsored by the Office of the VPREDKE at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), is a grant opportunity offered to enhance greater scientific collaboration between the two institutions and to increase both UTSA’s and SwRI’s research-funding base with cross-campus collaborative programs. The program encourages interaction between investigators in support of the acquisitions of established extramural, peer-reviewed research funding. This agreement provides unprecedented opportunities for researchers to work together in addressing issues of mutual interest and need. The combined contributions of the two organizations are $125,000, of which UTSA will dedicate $50,000.
Proposal Deadline: March 31, 2021
The RFPs with information on how to apply, faculty eligibility and deadlines are attached. RFPs will also be available for download on the VPREDKE’s Internal Seed Grant Programs page<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fresearch...>.
** Interested faculty should contact their respective Research Service Center (RSC) <https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fresearch...> to complete an Intake Form <https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcomal.i...> at the start of proposal development to initiate Research Service Center coordination. **

Subject: Incomplete Grades
Good morning Deans and Department Chairs,
We are receiving quite a few emails about incomplete grades so I wanted to send out some information.
1. If you are changing an Incomplete grade from a previous semester, you will need to submit a paper (fillable pdf) change of grade form under the Faculty Services tab in ASAP. Those changes were due Dec. 11 and have been changed to F grades and now require a grade change.
2. If you are trying to assign an Incomplete for this fall, you can do that via the link in ASAP today until noon. The IN is a menu option under the Faculty Services tab in ASAP. Here's the link (https://www.utsa.edu/enrollment/facultystaff/registrar/FacultyServicesHel...<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.uts...>) and the information:
"Requirements for Removal of Incomplete" Menu Option (Assigning or Changing a Grade of Incomplete)
This page allows you to electronically submit a Requirements for Removal of Incomplete form to the Registrar's Office. This form must be completed before an Incomplete final grade can be assigned to a student. If you need to give a student an incomplete grade, select this menu option. Once in this form, scroll down until you find the student you wish to assign the incomplete grade, and then click the "IN Request" link.
After you selected the "IN Request" link, you will be taken to another page where you can enter the following five items: (1) the reason for assigning the "IN" grade; (2) a check-box indicating that the student has attended at least three-fourths of the term (only students attending three-fourths of the term are eligible for an "IN" grade); (3) a letter grade indicating the student's academic progress so far in your course; (4) a short overview describing the work the student still needs to complete; and (5) a percentage indicating how much work still needs to be completed before a final grade will be given.
Once finished entering this information, submit the form. When you go to the Final Grade Worksheet, the grade of "IN" has automatically been assigned for this student.
Notice that you are not able to delete the "IN" grade on the final grade worksheet once the electronic incomplete form has been submitted. However, if the final grade entry window is still open and the "IN" grade has not been rolled to academic history, simply return to the electronic incomplete form and click the "Delete this Incomplete" button-this action removes the "IN" grade from the Final Grade Worksheet and allows you to enter other grades for this student.
Notice also, that when you are in the Final Grade Worksheet and you select the Grade list box, there is no "IN" grade option available. You can only give an incomplete grade from the electronic incomplete grade form.
After final grades have been rolled to academic history, you may submit an Online Grade Change to change this grade for an undergraduate student; however, the only the only way to change this grade for a graduate student is to follow the usual paper grade change procedures.
Thanks for all you do for our students. Take care!
Eric

I have been trying to submit my grades since Saturday morning. I have spent many, many hours on the phone with BB support/Academic Innovations. No one was able to help me. I just tried this suggestion, to submit grades manually via ASAP. I can follow the instructions but no matter how many ways I type in my course number, it says it doesn't recognize that course. My grades are still not submitted. Just want you to know that I tried my best. Don't know what else to do.

Re: REMINDER: Final Grades Due TODAY by 2:00pm and Instructions
by Bailey Devine
Hi All,
It appears that perhaps ASAP is “closed” now and won’t allow grade entry any further. I’ve tried a few different things and see this same error message every time.

Hi Barbara,
Make sure to select "Fall 2020" in the course term. I was having the same issue until I realized that it pre-populated with Fall 2021, which I had no courses listed.
Hopefully this solves your issue!!!
Thanks,

I have been trying to submit my grades since Saturday morning. I have spent many, many hours on the phone with BB support/Academic Innovations. No one was able to help me. I just tried this suggestion, to submit grades manually via ASAP. I can follow the instructions but no matter how many ways I type in my course number, it says it doesn’t recognize that course. My grades are still not submitted. Just want you to know that I tried my best. Don’t know what else to do.

We have been instructed to use Blackboard; however it is now working. You may enter grades directly into ASAP.

just want to clarify to all the new profs....
you can also easily manually enter final grades via ASAP. go under the faculty services tab & select “final grades.”
(profs with large classes enjoy the ease of the grade transfer via blackboard.)

Buyout notification request for researchers
by Michael Karcher
Dear Faculty,
If you bought out a class this fall, or will have a course buyout in Spring, using funds from a grant or sponsored project, please complete the notification at the BSC website before you leave for winter break (if you have not already done so). That way it can be processed and the recovered funds can be distributed in February.
At the link below you can notify the BSC and provide necessary information (employee ID, course(s) bought out, semester, and buyout amount)
https://utsa.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cxb7de9f545Wp37
Note: Use you grant proposal budget for funding amount, instead of your current salary, to determine the cost of the 10% per-class buyout effort (otherwise you may allocate more than actually budgeted if salary has changed).
FYI, other forms (or web portals) for requesting grant support services from the BSC (for both internal and externally sponsored projects) can be found at this BSC site as well:
http://education.utsa.edu/faculty/business_service_center_forms/
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Michael
