About the Workshop
This workshop introduces attendees to the Stanford Education Data Archive (SEDA), a database of nationally-comparable academic achievement data made publicly available by The Educational Opportunity Project (EOP) at Stanford University. SEDA is based on roughly 430 million standardized test scores from 3rd-8th grade students in U.S. public schools, districts, counties, and states from the 2008-09 through 2017-18 school years. These data enable nationwide research to better understand student achievement and educational opportunity.
In this workshop, the EOP team will provide a description of SEDA's contents, showcase examples of correlational and causal research that can be conducted with SEDA, and highlight relevant validation studies that support the use of SEDA in different types of research. Attendees can explore the SEDA data before and during the training using our interactive data explorer (https://edopportunity.org/explorer/<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Faera.inf...>) or by downloading the data files (https://edopportunity.org/get-the-data<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Faera.inf...>/) and using statistical software (e.g., R or Stata). The purpose of these grants is to provide professional development activities that will improve classroom instruction for English learners (ELs) and assist educational personnel working with such children to meet high professional standards, including standards for certification and licensure as teachers who work in language instruction educational programs or serve ELs. Grants awarded under this program may be used—(1) For effective pre-service or in-service professional development programs that will improve the qualifications and skills of educational personnel involved in the education of ELs, including personnel who are not certified or licensed and educational paraprofessionals, and for other activities to increase teacher and school leader effectiveness in meeting the needs of ELs; (2) For the development of program curricula appropriate to the needs of the consortia participants involved; (3) To support strategies that strengthen and increase parent, family, and community member engagement in the education of ELs; (4) To develop, share, and disseminate effective practices in the instruction of ELs and in increasing the academic achievement of ELs, including the use of technology-based programs; (5) In conjunction with other Federal need-based student financial assistance programs, for financial assistance, including costs related to tuition, fees, and books for enrolling in courses required to complete the degree involved, to meet certification or licensing requirements for teachers who work in language instruction educational programs or serve ELs; and (6) As appropriate, to support strategies that promote school readiness of ELs and their transition from early childhood education programs, such as Head Start or State-run preschool programs, to elementary school programs.

Collaborative Seed Grant (CSG)
The Brain Health Consortium (BHC) Collaborative Seed Grant (CSG) program, sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research, Economic Development, and Knowledge Enterprise (REDKE) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), is offering seed grants to support collaborative research at UTSA. These grants support a broad range of trans-disciplinary research that may yield fundamental insights into the mechanisms underlying brain disorders.

• Estimated Number of Awards: 1-2*, subject to availability of funds
• Maximum Total Funding Per Project: $30,000
Submission Deadline: April 19, 2021

I'm writing to invite your students to apply for Johns Hopkins University's second annual Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium. The symposium was designed to offer students across the country the chance to gather together and disseminate their humanities research on a national scale. COVID forced us to adapt to a virtual event<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fmackseys...>, but that in turn was a great success, with 359 participants and more than 10,000 visits to the conference site to date. This year's event will be virtual as well, held live on April 24th and 25th, 2021, and our application portal is now open<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fjohnsho...>. The deadline for abstract submissions is April 1st.
This symposium is open to undergraduate students from any two-year or four-year college or university who would like to present their original scholarship in the humanities. We hope to have 400 participants this year. In addition to the multiple panels of student papers and presentations (including original creative works), we will also have a wonderful keynote delivered by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anthony Doerr and multiple professional development panels featuring Johns Hopkins graduate students and faculty and editors from Johns Hopkins University Press. Students studying all areas of the humanities are welcome to attend. Attendees will also have the opportunity to work with our student editors to revise their presentation into a journal-length presentation for our journal of proceedings, the Macksey Journal<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fmackseyj...>.
