Funding Opportunities and Announcements March 29, 2021

Greetings Colleagues,
To close out March, here are a set of private foundation funding opportunities from the John Templeton Foundation, Together Women Rise, and The Transformational Partnerships Fund as well as four Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs FY 21 Autism Research Programs. There are reminders of quickly coming deadlines for some previously posted opportunities, and NSF funding links for their EHR and BSE directorates.
In the area of professional development, there is one article on writing proposals for fellowships, access to online recordings of two previous REDKE Office of Research Support workshops, and information to register for a free five-day CTE Research training in the summer.

Career & Technical Education Research Network 2021 Summer Institute Register by April 26, 2021

Early-career researchers and researchers from traditionally underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. The training will build the capacity of researchers to plan and conduct high-quality impact studies of CTE programs, practices, and policies. Participants will learn from experienced CTE researchers and experts in research methodology. A small class size of 16 to 18 people will allow for regular interaction with instructors and relationship-building. Online training will be conducted from June 14-18, 2021. Training topics will include CTE research exemplars, lectures on causal research designs in the context of typical CTE programs, and data labs for participants to apply the statistical concepts presented. In addition, guest speakers will explore topics such as seminal CTE research on Career Academies, research partnerships, and how to get your CTE project funded.
Specific topics include:
--Introduction to CTE policies and theories
--Overview of conducting CTE research
--Overview of causal research design
--Regression discontinuity designs
--Data lab: Regression discontinuity designs
--Comparative interrupted time series designs
--Data lab: Comparative interrupted time series designs
--Randomized controlled trials for CTE research
Students and instructors will meet online for approximately two hours each morning and afternoon. Between the live sessions, students will read required literature, prepare for discussions, and work with data. The training will end by noon on June 18.

The Character Virtue Development department at the John Templeton Foundation invites proposals from organizations that seek to strengthen their understanding and practice of character development through communities of practice. Many non-profit organizations that exist today are focused on scaling innovative solutions to complex social problems. Scaling programs is an important and often effective way to increase research and impact, but bringing a program to scale offers unique challenges for organizations that are interested in character development. Successful character development depends upon a range of factors including the presence of close relationships with a trusted adult or mentor, a strong purpose, robust cultural norms, and the opportunity to practice and grow in character over time. Of course, organizations must also focus on their financial health as well. Developing and maturing these diverse program components takes time, staff investment, and financial resources. In brief, many character-focused organizations need to focus on strength before scale.
Together Women Rise LOI due April 24, 2021

Together Women Rise is an educational giving circle: Its members meet monthly, learn about our featured and sustained grantees, and donate to Together Women Rise, allowing them collectively to support grassroots international organizations empowering women and girls living in extreme poverty. They fund projects that foster good health, education, and economic self-sufficiency in developing countries. They are devoted to educating and inspiring individuals to make a difference and fight global poverty through the power of collective giving. Together Women Rise selects a featured grantee each month and promotes it throughout the month at chapter meetings, through mailings, social media and online communications. Grantees are assigned to be featured in a specific month based on issue area and geography. Together Women Rise makes grants of $35,000-50,000 that may be disbursed in one distribution or which may be taken in up to two equal distributions spanning a period of two years.
Guiding Principles
--To maximize the educational opportunities for our members, during the course of a year, Together Women Rise will strive to fund projects that address the varied issues, needs, and geography of women and girls
--Projects funded will address one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
--Projects funded will create lasting change in the lives of the women and/or girls who are affected.
--Projects provide solutions that have been identified by the women and/or girls being served and must actively include their perspectives.
--Grantee must be able to demonstrate the direct impact of the project funded and demonstrate methods and ability to monitor and evaluate the project.
--Grantees are sustainable organizations with multiple funding sources.
Transformational Partnerships Fund rolling applications (see website with details on inquiring)

The Transformational Partnerships Fund (TPF) supports colleges and universities interested in exploring partnerships that could fundamentally improve how they operate and serve students — especially students of color, students from low-income families, and other underserved populations. TPF was established by ECMC Foundation, and SeaChange, with additional founding support from Ascendium Education Group and The Kresge Foundation. The Transformational Partnerships Fund supports colleges and universities interested in exploring partnerships and collaborations that could fundamentally transform the way they operate — centering students in solutions that deliver stability and success. Catalytic grants (up to $100,000 per exploration) can be used to engage third-party technical assistance providers knowledgeable in law, finance, governance, fundraising, human resources, and other related fields. These grants may support the exploration of partnerships in many forms — ranging from shared administrative services or consolidated academic offerings on one end of the spectrum, to full mergers on the other.
Partnerships supported by TPF typically involve two or more degree-granting institutions of higher education. These can include private nonprofit colleges, public universities or systems, community colleges, and (in exceptional situations) for-profit institutions. TPF will not consider grants to single institutions.
TPF will prioritize partnerships based on the following criteria:
--One or more of the participating institutions must serve a student population that is at least 25 percent persons of color and/or where 40 percent meet the financial criteria for Pell eligibility;
--One or more of the participating institutions deem the partnership to be transformational and that, if completed, it would make a material difference to the operations of the institution(s);
--The partnership, if completed, is expected to produce materially better outcomes for current and/or future students of the institution(s).

I am pleased to announce that Mr. Michael C. Wood will be joining UTSA as the new Director and Mr. Jesse P. Hernandez will serve as the new Assistant Director of the Research Service Center for the Colleges of Health Community and Policy, Education and Human Development, Business, and Liberal and Fine Arts (RSC-HEBA). They will be starting on April 1. Michael hails from the University of Florida and Texas A&M, where he acquired tremendous experience in sponsored projects, especially in pre-award. Jesse, who has been with UTSA Research since 2009, brings years of RSC experience; he is familiar with faculty and highly knowledgeable about their interests and research portfolios.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank those who have served on the search committee and provided their time and input to the process and its successful completion.
