The Office of the Provost and the Vice President of Academic Affairs announces the
promotion of 32 members of the UTSA faculty. The promotions were approved by the UT System
Board of Regents in August and were effective Sept. 1.

Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, honors the histories,
cultures, and contributions of U.S. Hispanic citizens whose ancestral roots date back to
Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. In the U.S., 16 percent of
the population is of Hispanic or Latino origin. In Texas, 38 percent of the population is
Latina/o.

In memoriam: Dewey Davis, first UTSA professor, dies at age

UTSA’s first faculty member, Dewey D. Davis, passed away Sept. 17 at age 86. A
first-generation college graduate who specialized in science education, Davis worked at
UTSA for 15 years but remained a fixture at the university until his death.
