doing so in the North Side, according to a recent ranking of San Antonio's elementary
schools. Roan Forest Elementary School took the top spot in the ranking from Children at
Risk, followed by Hardy Oak and Vineyard Ranch elementary schools, all located in North

It turns out, Hollywood got it half right. In the film Arrival, Amy Adams plays linguist
Louise Banks who is trying to decipher an alien language. She discovers the way the aliens
talk about time gives them the power to see into the future – so as Banks learns their
language, she also begins to see through time. As one character in the movie says:
“Learning a foreign language rewires your brain.”
Abbott signs David’s Law against

by ALIA MALIK - San Antonio Express-News | Pub: 06/13
With little fanfare, Gov. Greg Abbott has signed Senate Bill 179, known as David’s Law for
a high school student from Alamo Heights who was subjected to fierce cyberbullying before
he killed himself last year. The law allows temporary injunctions against social media
accounts used to harass or bully children and criminalizes electronic harassment of minors
with the intent of causing them to harm themselves. It also requires schools to speedily
notify parents if their children have been bullied and to notify the parents of children
accused of bullying. It will take effect Sept. 1. Abbott signed it late Friday.

In San Antonio, a community-based effort called MAS for the Masses continues to reach
students. A local KIPP charter school and Southwest High School offer MAS dual credit
classes in conjunction with Palo Alto College. And Stevens High School in Northside ISD
offers a Mexican American literature class. UTSA offers summertime MAS teacher training.
San Antonio’s strength also can be counted in the support of the MAS conference. UTSA
hosted it and its co-sponsors included PAC’s Center for Mexican American Studies, the
advocacy group Somos MAS, the Comparative Mexican American Studies Program at Our Lady of
the Lake University and San Antonio College’s Center for MAS.

Why are teachers so tired at the end of the school year? Maybe it's because they spent
the last nine months juggling a million things while still shaping the lives and minds of
the students in their care.
