Proposals now accepted for UTSA civic engagement
summit<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/proposal...
All UTSA community members and partner organizations are encouraged to submit workshop
proposals that enhance and build on the event’s theme, “Building a Civic Infrastructure
for a Changing Democracy.” Workshop topics could include civic engagement strategies,
highlights of impactful community projects, civic participation technologies, community
based research projects, and more. The hope is to share ideas, cross pollinate on research
and best practices, and ultimately energize our community to be engaged with advancing the
public good. Proposals will be evaluated by a committee of reviewers and rated for their
overall quality, qualifications of the presenter(s), alignment with the theme of the
summit, relevance and importance of the topic, and quality of accomplishing the learning
objectives. Sessions are also selected to provide a balanced program with a wide variety
of topics.

A Few (More) Education Bills to Watch in the 2017 Legislature: Senate
Edition<https://therivardreport.com/a-few-more-education-bills-to-watc...
by BEKAH MCNEEL - The Rivard Report | Pub: 11/28
If the surprising results of November’s presidential election has had one invigorating
effect, it is heightened vigilance regarding laws passed at every level of government. Add
to that a projected budget shortfall in Austin, and the 85th Legislature, which convenes
in January, should be one to watch. Advocates of public education are rolling up their
sleeves to fight for every penny. Since the Texas Supreme Court passed the hot potato of
finance reform back to the Legislature, the spud has cooled considerably. To ignite the
fires of political will, citizens will have to be prepared to follow legislation and
contact their representatives.

In 2006, after Costantino retired from the University of Texas at San Antonio, her
doctoral work in counselor education and supervision led her to work with refugees.
Working beside Community in Schools caseworkers she began working with refugee parents.
She joined Ria Baker and three other women to set up an office on the Northwest Side in
the heart of the refugee community. “I regard refugees as my neighbors,” she said.
“Whatever we can do to help them become more self sufficient is a benefit for the whole

public benefits. I think that’s a win-win situation.”

programs<http://www.csmonitor.com/EqualEd/2016/1121/To-help-low-income...
by NATALIE GROSS - The Christian Science Monitor | Pub: 11/28
Howard Smith, a professor of bicultural-bilingual studies at the University of Texas at
San Antonio, explained: “One of the arguments levied against African-American children,
especially in the poor areas where the dual-language programs are springing up, is that,
‘Well, these kids don’t speak standard English anyway, and we need to work on their
standard English.’” It’s a common argument, even among educators.
