Application Information - Summer Research Training Institute: Cluster-Randomized Trials
The National Center for Education Research (NCER) is accepting applications for its tenth Summer Research Training Institute on Cluster-Randomized Trials (CRT). NCER, a part of the Institute of Education Sciences, hosts this Training Institute to increase the capacity of researchers to develop and conduct rigorous evaluations of the impacts that education interventions have on student outcomes.
Dates: July 18-28, 2016
Location: Northwestern University, Evanston, IL

The Academy for Teacher Excellence, a center housed within the College of Education and Human Development, was recognized for its recent achievements by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics at a special ceremony on Thursday, February 18.

Dr. Lorena Claeys accepted the honors on behalf of ATE, which was named a Bright Spot in Hispanic Education and successfully answered the Initiative's 25th Anniversary Call to Action with its Summer Bridging Institute. Alejandra Ceja, executive director, and Jaqueline Cortez Wang, senior advisor, presented the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics honors.

The needs of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) are as diverse as the populations they serve, according to UTSA researchers Anne-Marie Núñez, Gloria Crisp and Diane Elizondo. In a newly published article in The Journal of Higher Education, the UTSA researchers say there are six broad classifications that can be used to differentiate HSI-designated colleges and universities found in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Over the span of six short years, COEHD’s School Psychology program has gone from a fledgling program to ranking 6th in the nation in terms of research productivity, when compared to other non-doctoral School Psychology programs between 2002-2011. During a recent National School Psychology (NASP) conference, the department's prowess in productivity was re-affirmed when COEHD's Dr. Jeremy Sullivan (#9), Department Chair and Associate Professor of Educational Psychology; and Dr. Norma Guerra (#20), Associate Professor; and their colleague in the college of business, Dr. Daniel A. Sass (#13), Associate Professor were named to the NASP Top 25 faculty members/most productive scholars in the school psychology specialist/masters level programs, based on authorship credit.

Three undergraduate students from the College of Education and Human Development’s Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching (ILT) were presented with the Giuseppe Antonio and Marietta Martinello Inquiry Award during the Interdisciplinary Studies Colloquium on Saturday, February 13. The colloquium also honored the life of Dr. Marian Martinello, who passed away last year.

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies is hosting an Interview/Resume Workshop for interested educational leadership and principal certification students on Saturday, February 20 at 9 a.m. on the UTSA Downtown Campus. The purpose of this workshop is to prepare students for their first administrative interview. The panel will first present general suggestions for preparing a resume and interview. Later, the panel will conduct 30-minute mock interviews followed by 15 minutes of debriefing and reflection. The panel includes school and district administrators from Harlandale ISD, Northside ISD, and San Antonio ISD. The University Life Awards, sponsored by the UTSA Student Government Association, is a UTSA tradition that honors the most outstanding students, student organizations, faculty, and staff members on our campus. From the colleges, the Student Government Association will recognize an outstanding undergraduate and graduate student. Finalists and winners will be announced at the University Life Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 7th. COEHD is seeking nominations for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students. In order to be eligible for the award, a student must be an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in the COEHD and currently enrolled at UTSA. The award is based upon academic achievement and involvement in the UTSA community. Completed nomination forms should be submitted to me via email or campus mail no later than close of business Friday, February 12, 2016.

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies is hosting an Interview/Resume Workshop for interested educational leadership and principal certification students on Saturday, February 20 at 9 a.m. on the UTSA Downtown Campus. The purpose of this workshop is to prepare students for their first administrative interview. The panel will first present general suggestions for preparing a resume and interview. Later, the panel will conduct 30-minute mock interviews followed by 15 minutes of debriefing and reflection. The panel includes school and district administrators from Harlandale ISD, Northside ISD, and San Antonio ISD. Carmen Tafolla, the 2015 Texas State Poet Laureate, visited Terlingua last week after selecting the Terlingua Big Bend School as a “Planting Poet Trees School.” The school was one of 20 selected to participate in the initiative. Tafolla “motivated and inspired Terlingua students through the reading and performance of her poetry,” Principal Reagan Reed said. “After her speech, she worked with both high school and middle school students to create their original student poems.”

It’s an election year in the United States, so U.S. teachers are constantly reminded of their role in the political process and the need to cast their votes for the elected officials that serve them. Often, educators feel like they are caught in the cross-hairs (an English idiom meaning, “in a position to be attacked” or “with nowhere else to go”) between the realities of school teaching and the policies being enacted far outside of the school context. Philadelphia 11-year-old Marley Dias was "sick of reading books about white boys and dogs" in school, so she decided to collect 1,000 books where black girls are the main characters. But talking about teachers like we're missionaries reflects a subtle bias, according to writer Amanda Ripley. She cites the common refrain, "Are you going to be a principal?" as evidence that people generally misunderstand the intellectual challenge of teaching: "Do people ask a pediatrician why she isn't gunning to be a hospital chief?" she writes (Washingtonian).
